Specs: Windows Vista
My friends acer laptop will not load xp normally. If you hit f8 before the loading screen you can go into safe mode. If you don't do that, it will not load right and just sit there on the loading screen. What do you do. Do i have to reinstall xp on it. It has no CD drive. It has usb ports.

This sounds like it's an Acer Netbook; no cd/dvd and only usb (and ethernet/wifi ports)?

And if so then it would appear to be at least the second one here that has these symptoms...

These little beasties do have a recovery partition I think... and if all else fails that's your way back...

However before going that path... and before attempting to fix the problems... first safeguard data etc. Boot into safe mode and copy them all to optical-media - which means you need a usb-CD/DVD burner..; or at least to a decent usb-stick or three...?

If you can get to e boot options... try last known good config.

And was there anything going on immediately prior to the problem(s) arrival; and/or did you install anythng new or make any changes?

You might also consider a chkdsk routine - wich ought to work OK even from safe-mode command line. It will run the check on next boot up... That at least would check the HD for integrity and may even resolve the problems...

Likewise you may have a RAM stick going down... If yo have two installed remove one (leave a min of128Meg installed) and see it helps? Try with each stick in turn...
