Comment:

I recently installed XP onto my hard drive after a format and tried to start XP for the first time but failed. The splash screen came on but then the monitor went onto standby mode. The hard drive was still working away and think it may have been at the desktop....but i couldnt get the monitor to show anything at all. I tried mouse movement, keyboard movement, switching the monitor off and on....changing the BIOS so it doesnt halt on errors!

Any ideas pleeeeeease???

that's very vague... what did you change in the bios? It sounds as though it might just be a bad install, I would try it again since it doesn't take long and you obviously don't have anything to lose since it's fresh. I'm not sure if you know what you're doing in the bios, but if you don't, you might want to reverse whatever you did there, if you remember, or reset it back to factory defaults before reinstalling.

Was this PC running XP before?

Posiable refreash rate for the video card/monitor with the new driver for XP.

Try booting to safe mode VGA and see if it displays the desk top.

is this xp pro? and is your video shared memmory by any chance? I noticed you only have 128, if it is shared you might have a problem there... if it is how much shared is it?

Thanks John,

This is the first time ive had it on this drive. I tried to safe mode and it worked but only one icon on desktop (recycle bin) dont know if that means anything.

Thanks Atomic Boy,

I thought by turning the "Halt On" in the BIOS to disabled it might stop the monitor going to standby. Will try what u sugeested though.

microsoft recomends 128M for XP PRO, but if you have onboard video, your video will be shared from your 128, which means if it's set up as 64M shared system memory, you effectively only have another 64M for XP to run, which I'm not would create your problem, but will definitly make it run slow. XP is very fast, even with old machines, I put it on a old P2 333, and it runs amazing now, but it has 320M. You need a lot of memory for it to run.

Check your bios and see what your shared sys mem is. Mem is cheap though, so youmight want to look into that, even if this isn't your problem.

If Xp comes up in safe mode correctly, your graphics card drivers are wrong or you have the adapter settings incorrect, it could be that you are trying the optimal settings when you should use the adapter default settings. (Located under Display Properties – Settings – Advanced)

You are only going to have one icon on the desktop (Recycle Icon), try switching to windows classic mode if you want to see the rest of the icons.

As for your lack of Ram make sure you change the windows settings to maximize performance versus setting it to work with all the bells and whistles.

Thanks for everyones help on this. I got there in the end.

Answer:

1. I started the PC as normal but went into the F5 mode as you would for selecting safe mode.
2. From that menu i selected start in VGA mode.
3. Windows then loaded as normal and i set my display settings as i wanted
3. Rebooted and the problem has gone

Note: With the type of processor and memory i have Win XP is slow to boot up and close but is pretty fast once up and running. However, there isnt any other software on yet!!!
