I have Me now - thinking of getting XP. Are there more problems with XP than with ME? Trying to find out the pros and cons. Any help would be appreciated

As with any new OS there will be some issues, mostly driver related. Give all of the manufacturers time to catch up.

I have had XP Pro for sometime (coming from ME) and the only issues I ran into were with a scanner (VERY OLD) and with Adaptec Easy CD Creator (4.0, 5.0 fixes it).

Just installed it yesterday. I was kind of hesitant also, but I did a bios upgrade and got all the new XP drivers for my hardware. Suggest a "clean" installation.. reformat the hard drive then install. I like the new interface, plus I don't have the shut down problem I had with ME!

Xp Vs. Me that is not even a fair fight. Comparing the too is like comparing a Top Fuel Dragster to a Go Cart. Yes, people will have problems with drivers and some older products, so is life with any new OS. Note I said ANY OS, problems will arise and that is what this board is for, to help you. So take the leap of faith and go out and get Xp.

If you want support for the widest range of apps/devices, for years to come, redeploy Win98.

WinME (DOS based) was widely acknowledged cripple, contriving narrower apps/devices support. Such was an interim OS designed solely for training the OEM/user base for the narrower device/apps support of NT 6...err, XP.

M$FT is desperately determined to shoehorn the NT kernel (via XP) onto consumer PC's. Not DOS based, it's a more proprietary OS allowing them slam the door shut on what was once a more open PC architecture.

Any new funcionality offered in either XP or ME is minimal, at best; and better achieved with third party apps in their previous OS's.

M$FT's nemesis is not DOJ or Linux. It's the more complete compatability, annonymity and transferability of their previous OS's.

If you crave stability in a windoze environment, and can live with limited support of games and many devices, load Win2k.

Syware passport, incessant MSN nagging and hostile copy protection help M$FT...but won't do SQUAT for most users.

Since Win98se/Win2k, their latest is no longer their greatest...at any price.

The original plan for Windows Me was to use the NT kernel because it is more stable, but the developers ran out of time so they threw Me at the consumers. Microsoft is working to fix problems that arise with XP, but they've given up on Windows Me so upgrading to XP is the way to go.

So, M$FT's recent track record is:

"the developers ran out of time so they threw Me at the consumers...they've given up"

...and for their latest beta relea$e:

"...working to fix problems that arise with X".

Is this why folx "up"grade? They're bored and need a fresh batch of problems ?

The NT kernel is nowhere near ready for mainstream distribution to consumers. Throw in copy-protection, .NOT, anti-trust conviction and XP becomes a PR/legal/service armageddon.

Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of convicted crooks.

Damn, Moiety. Ya know how to bring a smile to my face and make me laugh. Folks ya gotta love this guy. Course there going to release SP's and bug fixes. I have run almost every single MS OS for good reasons, my job requires me to know the in and outs of the OS. If I go to a clients office and they are running Xp and I don't know a damn thing about the OS how am I going to help them? I never heard the "they ran out of time statement before" that is a new one to me. As you already now, I love Xp. It's fast stable and I can tweak the crap out of it. All my drivers work, my scanner works, my printer works, my burner works, my game voice works, my cable modem works, hell everythign just works so I'm very happy with the OS. As I said before, you can't compare Me to XP and why is the mainstream public not ready for the NT kernel? Explain that one to me cause I don't understand that one. You don't have to use Passport nor .NOT as you but it, that one made me laugh big time. You can turn off automatic updates, uninstall MSN IM and go back to a older version, it's been done already by folks. What a lot of these so called experts say you can't do is total BS because you can, it's been proven time and time again. You will also be able to install XP on another system in 4months without any problems from MS at all, sure you have to wait 4months but it can be done. Ok, enough for now. Back to you Mr. Smarty Pants :-)LOL

Laters,

KTTD

P.S I really do like Moiety folks.

Simple. My ME works fine. XP why now? Because Microsoft says so so all the sheep go bah and get on board. Ther herd mentality. I'll get xp but will wait about 6 months when the drivers are ready, etc.

Im using winxp, and have not had a system error yet, winme does everyday.
The ntfs file system handles much larger harddrives than winme. If you eventually go to a 40 plus gig harddrive you will need to go with nt for compatability. Also the nt os supports more ram than windows 9x. Don't remember the exact numbers on that, but fat32 reached its hardware limits sometime ago.

Monica, you stay behind the times then. I do not jump on any MS bandwagon nor follow any sheep. I have been running Xp for 5 months now and when a client of mine calls me up and says, can you tell me about Xp I can give them the pro's and con's of the OS, can you? Nope because you will wait for 6months. Well in 6 months I will have the OS mastered and you will just be learning it. Some of US learn new OS'es to keep up and not fall behind. Do I know Linux, yes. I know Windows better because that is my client base. So go ahead and wait and get left behind.

Just to let all you Me users out there know...there is a major Memory leak issue with it that M$ has yet to fix. With the deployment of XP I doubt they'll make a fix for it soon. As for XP, I ugraded to it because it is MUCH more stable, the entire OS does not crash because of a program locking up, quicker, built on the NT kernel, etc.. If you want to stick with Me it's anyone's call and problem...not mine. XP is the way to go, the only way I would wait if I were a consumer is wait until all the hardware in your computers have XP drivers released from the manufacture then upgrade. As of now XP has some issues with older hardware not newer...but with the newer drivers coming out those problems should be cleared up.

Microsoft finally is competing with the technology OS/2 had already offered a decade ago.

It would be nice if you could choose your file system though. It would even be better if you had something like REXX.

I wouldn't be surprised if OS/2 is still the platform Microsoft is writing their NT based operating system.

Well, the best I could say is the software child of IBM is finally maturing.
