Go to contal panel, Sounds and Audio Devices and click Advance to contral the volume, if you want the Volume contrall icon in the taskbar then make a check by the Place volume ican in the task bar.

In windows 98 there is a place to re-install the volume control in the ADD/remove program in the control panel select the add/remove windows components I think select accesories and click details and make a check by the volume contrall to re-install it. By my comp. it doesn't have it in XP pro but try your luck and

Good luck!

I have the same problem and cannot find the answer. The fix sounds easy, it just will not work.

ERROR: Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it, use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. (but there is no option for this)
I get the same msg when i try to put the icon in the taskbar. I have sound but have to control it w/ the speakers.

Look up role in using Volume Control
in Help and Support Center

Insert the installation compact disc.
Click Browse the CD.
In the folder list, open the I386 (was misplaced on my computer) or IA64 folder.
Find the name of the missing file.
Note The last letter in the file name extension will be replaced by an underscore because it is a compressed version of the file. For example, notepad.exe is called notepad.ex_ on the installation compact disc.

Copy the compressed file to your systemroot\System32 folder on your hard drive.
Click Start, click Run, and then type:
expand %systemroot%\system32\my_file_name.ex_ %systemroot%\system32\my_file_name.exe
and then press ENTER.

Tech Supports leeto idea was restore... where you go back to some previous settings, undoing any changes, addtions or updates you may have made since then... all for an icon thats del w/ the volume control program?

i'm like LOOK i have the XP disk, why cant i browse this and get the volume control off it ?! i dont want to restore/go back (you may want to, its a feature RESTORE, look it up)

'o i dont know how to do that' and refered to a non toll free # for software ...
