Get hold of the free Reg.cleaner from:
http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/software.shtml
Under the 'startup' tab, remove all background programmes that are not required.
If in doubt, cross reference with the list at: http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm#Alpha

On window's xp needs at least 128 to run but 512 will make very happy. On the virtual memory the rule is pretty much one and a half time of the phyical memory that is installed,so in the case of 512 of phyical ram, virtual would be 512+250 which would be 730 there abouts.Good luck
