I'm using a laptop with windows xp media center edition, can I install XP pro on it without any problems? Is the computer compatible? I'm just looking for a straight forward yes or no.

No. I think :-). If I'm not mistaken if you put a Windows XP SP2 or earlier install CD in, Media Center will probably tell you that it is newer and you cannot install the older version.
Try it while in Windows. Put the install CD in and see what it tells you.
If you totally wipe out the computer, then Yes you can install it.

Optionally, you could just have two OSes on the drive. If done right (and with a little luck), you could have both OSes use the same set of programs.

you cannot install an older version after the newer version. you can install a newer version after an older version....unless you use a 3rd party boot manager like 'bootit NG' from terabyte. then any version may be installed at any time on any partition which is going to be your biggest issue...you should install each operating sytem on it's own partition!

WMCE uses the same base as XP, therefore yes you can install any version of XP providing you can locate suitable hardware drivers, for devices XP does not support "out-of-the-box"

Yes. any computer capable of running MCE is able to run XP pro without any compatibility issues.
whether you chose a virtual environment, dual booting or a clean installation abandoning MCE ... the choice is yours.

The site you linked to is referring to what you can use UPGRADE versions of the OS on.
It should be possible to install WinXP in addition to WinMCE. I have asked why the OP wishes to do that but there is no response.

The reason I'm switching is because I use my computer for music production, and a lot of the hardware/software I use has drivers that specifically do not support windows xp MCE, and the incompatability has been causing my system to progressively become more and more unstable after I plug them in.

If there are no drivers for WinMCE then I doubt there are any for WinXP. WinMCE IS WinXP with a few enhancements geared toward multimedia.
Have you verified the needed drivers are available for WinXP?
What you are stating as far as compatibility doesn't make much sense.
I would speculate that something else is causing the issues you are having. Sometimes certain hardware or software doesn't play well together. At any rate, if what you suspect is true then you definately don't want to intall over the top of MCE.
A fresh install on a separate partition would assure the best result. I suspect things may not be any different though.
