Hi All,
I upgraded from win 98 to Xp home edition and it has caused some problems. I have an Internal Hewlett Packard 8200a Cd writer that runs Adaptec Easy Cd creator 3 and now my important cd files cannot be read from the drive as the discs are not recognised . The roxio.com website says that there will be no xp patches made available and even there latest easy cd creator software is not Xp compatable ...what can I do ? Is there any way to retrieve this information from my discs without going back to win 98'. Any help is much appreciated.

This may or may not fix your problem... but last night I went to Microsoft's Web Site and did an update for Windows XP, and there was one update for expanded CD Writer Support. As usual the site checks installed components and your hardware and offers new drivers and patches, etc.
Good luck.

Just curious, were the CD’s formatted and recorded with Direct CD or Easy CD Creator?

Can other CD’s be read from that drive?

Thanks for your replies. I did download that cd-writer support file off microsoft's site but it did nothing. It's basically adaptec software incompatability I think. Kelly I formatted these discs with adaptec direct cd software that runs through a drive letter so the disscs would only work when loaded in my hp drive. Now nothing happens when I load a cd and they appear blank. Yes other software discs and music cd work fine in the drive it's just these adaptec cds that won't work...I have about 6 websites stored on them and am really stuck as I need these files. This is what I get for upgrading.

Graham I had a feeling you were going to say that.

Have you got access to another system with Adaptec Direct CD Creator on?

If you have, copy those CD’s to the hard drive, then copy back to new CD’s using Easy CD Creator (NOT Direct CD).

Personally I wouldn’t touch Direct CD with a barge pole. There have been lots of issues about it in many groups from many people, however that’s another story

I think you need another driver for XP,but HP has the new drivers not yet released for windows XP.

My HP burner also doesn't work with XP

My CD writer works fine with XP.
I can also read a DirectCD CDs..
The only problem is that the CDs are not writable unless I re-format them to XP format.
Btw, roxio stated that XP upgrade will be available soon..
You can check on their website
http://www.roxio.com

You don't need cdwriter software like Adaptec or Nero to write data to a cd.
WinXP burns directly to an empty cd, without extra software.
I've tried it yesterday and it worked great.
The only thing you can't do is CD to CD copying.
But there's always a proggie like CloneCD to cover this.

I have a hp cd-writer plus 8000. I recently upgraded from winME to winXP. I am having a similar/same problem with my cd-r's. All of my burned Memorex cd's are showing as corrupt and unreadable. Also a few of my TDK cd-r's won't work either. The file tree is there, but none of the files can be copied or used. I tried them on my laptop running win98se and they work perfect. HP has no updated drivers that handle this issue nor could their tech support help (they told me to reinstall win ME...yeah riiiiiight). Memorex is absolutely no help in correcting this flaw (they'll gladly take the cd's I have with data and replace them with blanks...yeah riiiiiiight!). I checked Microsoft's website and found (I hope I understood them correctly) that they don't currently have a patch or anything to fix this, but that they are working on it. If anyone else has corrected this problem, please notify me with how you were able to do it. I cannot access about 35 gb of data and it is really pissing me off.

i belive there is a problem with the HP CD-Writer 8200a drivers in windows XP, because when i had my drive in an external USB case it worked fine. But when i installed it as an internal drive is stated to f**k up.. It told me that my drivers for the HP CD-Writer 8200a are not found..and now i'm getting P.O.'ed. i guess i'll just go back to the external USB drive...
