Hi peeps! Wondering if it's a good idea to upgrade to XP using XP upgrade on top of Windows 98. My hard drive is at FAT32 and if I do an XP upgrade, I doubt I can change it to NTSF therefore not experience the full potential of XP(so i heard??). Will my computer be as stable as a full Windows XP computer since mine is going to be Windows98-to-XP?? I find Windows 98 really unstable.

well i recommand you to wipe everything out.because fat 32 is not compatible to xp.. windows xp use NTFS partition. if you just upgrade it without changing its partition then windows xp will be unstable.

I dont believe you have to wipe it. Windows XP should run with FAT32. Windows upgrade should be fine because all it looks for is a licensed Windows product on your computer, which 98 would be in your case. If you are not sure, check the Windows support page. They list which upgrades will work for what operating system. I.E Windows 98 to XP Home...etc. And by the way, why dont you think you can change to NTSF?

Fat32 is compatilbe with XP. You should have no problem either way.

I'm not too familiar with partitions. I thought you have to wipe everything clean first and then can you change the patition. Isn't that the case?

Yes you can install Xp over 98. But I do not recommend it. Doing so often just leads to problems and Xp often gets the blame for it, making Xp look bad. When infact Xp is the best version of windows.

You can do a clean install of Xp without having 98 installed. Just have a Win98 cd ready cause Xp will ask you for it.

Xp is completely compatible with fat32 and is recommened for harddrives less then 40 gigs. You can easily convert fat32 to ntfs with Xp installed. I would leave it as fat32 at least until your sure you'll be happy with Xp.

Let me put in my two cents. I have 10 computers with XP installed. 3 of them I did upgrades from Win98SE initially. I installed the other 7 directly from the CD with totally blank hard drives (ran wipedrive on them). I don't allow our users to download other software or mess with the computers. They are running extremely solid and everyone is happy. The 3 that I upgraded initially ran good, then started giving me "odd" problems. Nothing I could really pin down. They were driving me crazy and if I could get enough data I would have been writing here for help. I finally wiped them and did a clean install and they are running just great now. Your call. I personally wouldn't do XP any other way.

Definitely convert to NTFS. it's a far more stable, faster system. You can do everything from the XP disk now, don't need an A drive boot disk. It's really simple. Just delete all partitions first, then create one large partition (if you want, of course) and tell it to install NTFS. Simple.
