I'm wondering what, if anything, I can shut off on my task manager. I'm running a lot of stuff. I'm okay with computers, not wonderful though. My father and brother know what they're doing pretty well, but they're not here, and so they really dont' want to do this over the phone, they said just type in what I have running on google.com and see what it does to see if I can shut it off. I figured this would be the easiest way, is to ask on this. This is what I have running. What from this list can I shut off?

wuauclt.exe
evntsvc.exe
wfxmod32.exe (i think i can shut these and other wfx stuff off cause it's winfax, but i'm not sure if it's a requirement to run)
sw_serv.exe
nvsvc32.exe
rundll32.exe (i'm pretty sure this has to run)
pgmonitr.exe
dw.exe
navapw32.exe
dpps2.exe
navapsvc.exe
wfxsnt40.exe
directcd.exe
mbm5.exe (i'm sure htis has to run too since it's the motherboard)
explorer.exe (i know this has to run)
spoolsv.exe
svchost.exe
lsass.exe
services.exe
winlogon.exe
csrss.exe
smss.exe

Anyone who can help, it would be appreciated, I don't want to do this by myself, cause I don't really want to crash my computer.

All of the following files can be turned off. use the Start/Run/ and type msconfig
then disable all of the once on the list.
Remember, some things might be needed. The once to turn off on this list will leave you with only the services that windows came with.

evntsvc.exe
wfxmod32.exe
sw_serv.exe - FTP?
pgmonitr.exe
dw.exe
dpps2.exe
wfxsnt40.exe
directcd.exe - Burning Software?
mbm5.exe - motherboard doesnt need a service, its hardware.

=== the above should be turned off to gain RAM ==============================================

CRC,

it's not very safe to turn off those items in MSCONFIG. only the ones that in startup because the other ones are system files.

Hey, thanks for the responses, really appreciate it. My comp isn't running slow or anything, well it's a little slower than when my dad and his friend first made it, but that's to be expected. I figured I'd clean it up a little though. Maybe this will get it back up to speed a little. I can't figure out why, when I first got it, I could click on control panels, and all the options popped up very quickly, now it takes a couple seconds to load. I dont' really have that much that I've put on here. My c drive is about 2/3 full, but I haven't put all that much on here. Maybe this will help.

HI Christine,

This is one of my favorite tweaks for Xp as far as the loading of icons, this means a dable in the registry but the results are huge.

1st.
If your not comfortable with messing in the registry, please back-up.

Here’s how you can do it :
(Opening the Registry)
1. Click on the Start button, and click "Run". In the Run dialog box, type "regedit" (without the quotes), and then click "OK". The Registry Editor opens.
2. Scroll to the top if necessary, and select My Computer at the top of the left pane.
3. Click "File", and then click "Export".
4. Click the Desktop icon (or wherever you’d like to save the backup).
5. In the File name box, enter a name that you will remember, such as"regbackup".
6. Click Save. The file is saved to the destination you chose.
In order to restore the registry to its former state, simply double-click the backup file.

2nd.

On XP the Max Cached Icons is set too low,
• To change this go to regedit, location :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/currentversion/Explorer
• In the right window, double click "Max Cached Icons", type the value 8192 ,then reboot you should see a big speed boost icon load, and opening folders.
NOTE -If the value is not there, you can simply create it :
go to the above specified location, right-click an empty space in the right window and select « new » > « string value ». For the name, type :
Max Cached Icons
then double-click it and enter the specified value (8192).
(provided by Perris, aka "Dealer")

It sounds a little complicated, take your time, but the results are amazing.

If you need any more help on this please post back.
