boot up in safe mode by holding F8 or F11. this will boot windows with only the programs that are absolutely necessary for functioning and you should see an increase in speed. after it starts, do all the normal things: virus scan, spyware check. go to start->run and type msconfig in the box and google the entries you find listed in the startup tab. disable any that you dont think you need right away. if all works well, your comp should be back to normal. if you have viruses and spyware, take the necessary preventative measures and keep your os updated so that something like this doesnt happen again.

Also to say that my Compaq laptop starts up slower than my Compaq desktop. Not as slow as yours.
What I do for faster startups is to do a Hibernation shutdown.
