Can anyone tell me why my XP system save is taking up all 5 GB's of my partition, but when i look at whats really in the folders, it only adds up to around 1.5 GB's. So where has all the space gone? 3.5 gigs? Someone please tell me how I can recover this space, and clear it up.

I'm thinking the reason that it says 3.5gbs and its only 1.5, uh... Hard Ware swaping of some kind? Sorry i'm not to much help but hope someone else can.

I had a similar problem cos the system resore was using all my space...

Have a go at using the system cleanup

START>PROGRAMS>ACCESORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS>DISK CLEANUP

Get rid of all your temp files and use the option to delete all but your most recent restore point... this will free up loads of space if you have recently been installing your software!!!

i tryed the disk cleanup and it cleared up about 10 MB's. I am somehow missing 3.5 gb's of space. I have a 5gb harddrive and is full, but only 1.5Gb's of it is actually being used from what I can see. Where did the rest of it go? I dont feel like adding more space to the partition when its already 5 GB's and its only using 1.5 of it. Someone please help me.

To allocate the space for System Restore

R.click My Computer - Properties - System Restore Tab

Now press Settings and set the slider

The default setting is 12.5% of HDD space -

Where you put it will depend on the size of you HDD ie 5% of 60Gb is a lot more than 5% of 1.5Gb but you must have it set at least about 300Mb

I think that will give you about two weeks worth of Checkponts

If you do need to use Sys Rest then you want to go back as near to the present as possible, when your computer was ok -ie yesyerday or the day before - maybe one week

The further back you go, the more 'work' you'll have to do afterwrds

How much space have you allocated to the Re-Cycle Bin and Temporary Internet Files and how many days in Internet History

Try reducing those - if you haven't already

I clear our the temp internet files, and history daily. As well as I dump the trash can before I check the space on the drives. Something has to be wrong for 3.5 GB's to just disappear??? Maybe its the pagefile or something, i have absolutely NO idea. Anyone?

It is probably not the cause anyway but what I was getting at was that even if you manually empty these places, the allocated space is still reserved

see how much space is set for your re-Cycle bin for some reason i think XP sets 3 gig for re-Cycle bin because when people burn dvd's to hard drive then to a disk they need alot of space in the re-Cycle bin to emty it from the hard drive after burnning so i believe the default size of the re-Cycle bin is 3 gig but i may be wrong
