Hi,
I cannot restore my system to an earlier date and the system restore utility after system restart gives message that operation incomplete...your system cannot be restored...although system checkpoint is there for each date...i have one usb hard disk...i removed it before system restore & it says that changes cannot be restored to those drives...is it due to this removal that system is not restored..thanks in advance

Yes it is unfortunately. Several years ago I once ran into the same problems and asked the guy who knows all about Windows SR.

First read what he wrote HERE.

Second you need to turn off SR from monitoring any other drives other than Windows drive.
