I'm attempting to restore/repair my friends eMachine, for the umpteenth time, and after clicking "F2" for repair it requests that "Windows Automated System Rescue Disk" be inserted. What diskette is this referring to? Is it a recovery diskette that my friend should have made up for emergency purposes?
The file that is missing is: windows\system32\config\system.
Please advise.

This machine has XP Pro installed I should have made mention of that, it's not OEM version of XP. I'm attempting to repair from the XP Pro CD. Thanks anyway.

if you want to repair the installation, do not press F2.
wait till the screen where you get 3 options
1. press enter to install windows xp
2. press R to repair an existing installation
3. F3 to exit setup
press R when you get to this screen and proceed according to the instructionsmy signature does not look like this

What is the reason you're going through this process to begin with? Perhaps we could help you with the real problem.

Okay, what is the real problem. This machine will not boot/start. The following is the error message:Windows cannot start because the following file is missing or corrupt: Windows\system32\config\system. You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original CDROM. Select "R" at the first screen to start repair.
That is what I tried and in my original post I stated that after selecting "R" it asked for a "Windows Automated System Rescue Disk." I have no such disc/diskette (floppy), hence my inquiry.
Please advise.

If you have tried Response Number 3, try the repair option off the XP cd.You must have the bios set to boot from the cd 1st.

see response 4
I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Okay, understand the four steps now. Upon clicking R it now asks for administrator pass word. The guy said he didn't use one or if he did he's forgotten it. It appears the only alternative now is to format and reinstall, am I correct?

"now asks for administrator pass word"
Have you tried skip, pass or something like that. Also, are you skipping the 1st Repair screen offer & continuing on to the next offer to Repair. That is the one to use.
Here is the wording.

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER:
To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is displayed. Do not select this option.
On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP.

If you're being prompted for the Administrator password, you're selecting the Recovery Console. That's not what you want to do. Do what JohnW says.

Okay, sorry for the delay in answering was away for a day. I'll follow the instructions from JohnW and get back later today. Again thanks for all the efforts.

Okay, that was simple enough. I guess I was hitting the "R" to soon. Thanks for all the efforts and patience with me. This PC is up and running thanks to you all.
