You can reinstall XP and keep all of your documents and setting by doing the following if the above posts do not help you out.

1. When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.
2. Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.
3. Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.
4. In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
5. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.
6. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

You could also try the System File Checker built into Windows XP. It will replace missing or damaged system files. You need to have the Windows XP disk available for this operation.

To run it, type the following

Start
Run
sfc/scanonce
OK

If you have not already put the Windows XP CD in the drive, the program will ask for it. That is the source of the files used to replace those that are found to be missing or damaged.

This is easy to do and does not take too long. It has a progress bar that shows the status of the operation

System file checker or a reinstall of XP will not adequately solve this problem. This is a corrupted registry and the only way around it without losing all your data is to follow the MS article above. This will allow you to reinstall the necessary registry file and boot up without losing any valuable data. Lots of typing involved but it does work.

HI! I am encountering the same above mentioned problem and I'm also dying to keep all my existing documents and settings. I've tried the suggestion posted by STUMP but the problem is I do not get the R option at the point.
Please advise.
I'm running WinXP Pro.

Im having a problem with random blue screens which i think is related to corrupt system files. If i try to run sfc, i get a blue screen. If i try to run memory intensive programs, like adding a 700mb file to winzip, i get a blue screen. Sometimes when outlook is loading my pst i get a blue screen. System file checker always is 'unable to finish' checking my hard drive.

I recently formatted because my xp couldnt boot due to blue screens. Whenever i tried to do an xp installation, i would get a blue screen as it was copying the necessary files to the hard drive, and then i would get stuck in an infinite trying to install resulting in a blue screen loop.

What i ended up having to do was installing windows2000 and then doing an upgrade to xp, but im still getting blue screens :( Any other ways to fix this?
