OS: XP Home SP 2
CPU/Ram: 92 MB
Comment:

I reformatted this computer (which was Windows 98) and loaded windows XP. Now when I try to boot I get the the Windows XP Screen (the one with the blue bar scrolling under the logo) and it hangs (bar stops scrolling and nothing happens). It will let me boot in safe mode, and in safe mode with networking. Last known configuration does not work.

Any suggestions??

Hi Mellissa, Agree with JohnW, you need to check the specs to run XP here.

I checked... It said it would run on minimum of 64... recommended 128. I'll install some more ram tonight though and see if it help.

Try to get up to at least 256. You can find inexpensive new ram on Ebay.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Use your 95 or 98 boot disk Mellissa, your bios will need to be set to boot from floppy 1st.

If you want to have another go at XP, this will get your HD really clean. Being a Compaq, unwanted files will still be on the HD.

WIPE OUT
http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/index.html
Freeware.
WIPE OUT : as the name implies, this utility will absolutely WIPE your hard drive. For those
times when an industrial strength cleaner is needed to remove any pesky files Fdisk may have
left behind. A readme file is included in the zip file. WARNING...WIPE OUT will remove ALL data
from the Hard Drive.

WARNING
The use of WIPEOUT can and will result in the loss of ALL data on your hard drive.

DIRECTIONS

1- Unzip file
2- Copy WIPEOUT to a Win9x/me boot disk
3- Boot with Win9x/me disk
4- At the A:\> type "wipeout c: /nq /np" (no quotes)
/nq = no queries - you will not be asked if you are sure.
/np = no partitions - this will overwrite the MBR

Press Enter.

Now run fdisk to set up partitions.
When done, reboot & format.
