Hello. Now my problem is that it stalls during the preparing installation phase. I took out my printer and modem ports and resetted the computer and it just gets stuck. I really want to upgrade and DO NOT want to do a clean boot b/c I do not want to format my hardrive unless I absolutley have to. Just takes too much work to back up about 40 CDs. Thank you. BJ

Compare burning 40 CDs to a lifetime of visiting forums with niggling errors because you didn't do a fresh install.
Up to you at the end of the day, but NO-ONE with any sense should upgrade, it's a whole new world of pain.
Don't say I didn't warn you.

Hooner is right. Doing an upgrade is asking for trouble. But if you really must, do a scandisk with the thorough and fix errors boxes checked. Then defragment. Use a registry cleaner. Might help.

Your problem may be a weak power supply. If your power can't handle spinning the cd around for 45 minutes, it will stall - I've seen it before many times. A quick fix is usually installing the os on a bare ide machine - one hd and one cdrom, your floppy is ok to leave plugged in. That should work, if not look at your power supply and decide if you need a new one.

I experienced this while installing Win98 for a friend, maybe it applies to your problem too. Disable the virus protection in your BIOS and try installing again.
