OS: XP
CPU/Ram: 256M
Comment:

Windows XP is more stable than Windows 2000
which was very prone to crash.
But it still crashes!

For many applications, there is now a fix:
use Linux instead: Red Hat 8.0, or Suse 8.1
crashes are very rares: the whole system is
very stable, and many applications run a
lot faster!
The draw back?
Need to learn a more powerful, feature
rich new OS. Not for everyone, just for the
power user who want the best.
Agree ?

Disagree.
I only reboot win 2000 about once every 10 days.
XP is no more stable....no less either..
Suggestion ?
Learn Windows.

Xp has not crashed on me for over 8 months, and that crash was operator error which is cause of most problems.

I disagree as well. Two main problems with Xp are 1. upgrading and not installing clean and 2. running crap software like kazaa.

If setup right Xp doesn't crash.

Another thing I forgot to mention that can cause stability problems is incompatible hardware or badly written drivers.

All depends on what you're using the PC for.

If it's at home and you wnat games and things, XP is much better and definitely more stable.

instability usually comes from badly written applications. Mostly from pporly tested shareware items when folks don't want to spend money on real products.

For the most part I tend to steer clear of non-Microsoft products, even hardware items like mouse, choosing those only when there isn't a MS application or hardware item.

Of the dozens of businesses and folk I know who use XP problems usually occur more frequently where 3rd party and shareware is present.

Most often folks with KaZaa and other 'file sharing' apps have the most 'crashes'.

No more need be said.

I find Windows 2000 and XP pro about equal in stability. XP is much better overall for software and game compatibility. Linux is a good OS........but like you said not for the average user. And gaming is much better with XP overall.
Ive been pushing Windows XP hard for over three months and not a single crash.
I think Microsoft has done a fine job this time with Windows XP.
Security problems yes........but 98 percent of the problems are Internet Related.
Windows XP is not perfect....but it is the best Windows out there right now.

I agree that Linux is much more stable than any MicroSoft product. However, it sounds to me like you have different problems than a different OS will solve. Window 2k was a stable OS and XP is even more so. Not perfect but better than previous releases. I have a Windows 2k server that I haven't rebooted for many months. I have a Linux server that has never been rebooted accept at a scheduled time (about every 6 months for maintenance). My point is that it sounds like you need to look into the possibility of hardware conflicts, drivers, or third party applications as the culprit, because if you just put a different OS on the machine, your problems may not disappear.

Those of you who don't know how to use PCs and havew no real ide of what the problemsa are need to go back to school. I used win 2k and Xp and both never crashed. I did have programs that crashed, but never the OS. Why? I examine the softawe that I install thourally and if it is faulty i eather fix it of make some substitute for it. Testing with controlled environments is the answer.

A car which is not driven never crash.
A bad (poorly written) software application
cannot crash a well written OS.

Excepted the device drivers (granted)
because they access low level system
ressources and maintening there a good
level of protections would make the code
heavy, inefficient in many cases.

But it is difficult to understand why a
system written by hackers for fun, is much
more stable that a system written by pros!
I guess the pros do not check their
"spelling" before they release their work?

I have been using xp pro for almost 12 months. I has never crashed. There have been times it looked like it had frozen or crashed, but it had not, it had been bogged down running things.
I was temped to hit the power button , but i have always found it to recover or {catch up} in a few seconds.

How did they make it so stable?
It just keeps on running.

PS , i don't have my system loaded with useless poorly written extra programs.

xp pro is a blessing!

I even recovered with the "restore to last configuration that worked" after installing incd and getting trapped in a statup crash scan disk loop!

It was like magic!

Windows is NOW a REAL operating system.
