Yesterday M$ delayed releasing SP3 to the web (see story below). I don't know where you got it (certainly not from Windows Update as it still doesn't offer SP3 - I just checked it).

(EDIT) In any case what I think you should do is perform a System Restore to remove SP3.

i'd encourage anyone who is considering SP3 to slipstream the installation files into the windows XP cdrom and perform a clean installation.

copy the content of the XP CD onto the hard drive then use the 'integrate' switch and target directory (e.g. C:\SP3-Setup-File /integrate:C:\XP-CD-Content) then create a bootable CD ... or simply use nLite.

XpUser,
Thanks for your response to my problem. I downloaded SP3 from MS and tryed to install it on 04/28/04 and spent the next day trying to find a solution and today posted my question on computing net. I will take your advice and restore my system. However, can I expect my problem to be solved when MS release XP SP3 to the public?

My rule of thumb is never rush to download anything - wait a few weeks to make sure nothing bad comes out of it as reported on the net & Forums & blogs.

The Oracle,
Thanks for your response to my problem.I am not knowledgeable of slipstreaming the installation files into the windows XP cdrom process. Can you give step-by step details on how I can create a bootable CD? I do not have access to nLite.

use AutoStreamer

Basically, all it really needs is a source (that being an original Windows CD or a local share) and a Service Pack file.

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/...

and here's a guide (referring to SP2 but works with SP3 all the same):

http://www.simplyguides.net/guides/...

if you don't have NERO, use any other Image Burner to create the CD (e.g. ImgBurn)

nLite is freeware. Find it at the link below.

OtheHill,
Thanks, for your response. However, I am still at an impasse. I have the orginal XP disk that was used to install XP Home Edition, the SP2 CD, the SP3 EXE file I downloaded from the MS web site. Now, I think I need to decide which software I want to used, nLite or AutoStreamer, then download and install it on my PC. Then copy the contents of the orginal XP files to a folder on my PC. After that some how I have to figure out how nLite or AutoStreamer will select which files from my orfinal XP CD and then intergrate SP3 and slipstream them onto a CD and make bootable

I think either one will get the job done. nLite is pretty easy to use. I haven't used AutoStreamer so I can't speak to it.

Actually you don't really need either of them to slipstream. There are many links addressing slipstreaming. Some sites get into more detail and explain how to even incorporate drivers and individual hotfixes. The idea is to install the most complete OS you can without incorporating items that may not be appropriate for a future system.

Some examples of what you can include DirectX, WMP, SATA drivers. In the case of DirectX, many graphic drivers need a certain version of DX installed before installing the Graphic drivers. Slipstreaming can be an ongoing process.

If you slipstream some items you can use those cab files as the basis for further slipstreaming. It appears SP3 is replacing much of the OS. When you slipstream the newer files will automatically replace the older ones. Plus your installed size should be smaller.

there isn't any arcane science to either program, AutoStreamer probably easier to use, nLite is the better choice if you wish to customize and automate the installation.

As was stated way above SP3 is buggy so don't do anything with it yet.

Once you do make a slipstreamed disk be sure to test it before you need it.

One thing to be aware of, you MUST create the slipstream on a Win2000/XP/Vista computer. I included Vista but I am making an assumption there as I don't use it.

c'mon, OTH, SP3 is probably less buggy than any previous service pack. at least it has been tested in public on a far broader scale than its predecessors.

yes, there are issues, and there will be more issues, but MS will not likely release anything like SP3a.

you have to take into consideration that they're dealing with billions of different configurations. and plenty of 'screwed up' installations that will be just upgraded via automatic update (a nightmare, if you're askin' me, i don't envy tech support in the next couple of weeks). but if you slipstream and install from scratch, you're pretty much on the safe side.

This is M$ way of trying to push everyone onto Vista, by making a flakey installment of SP3 for XP. :)

Maybe there was a hidden messege behind Ballmer saying, nobdy wants XP. :)

edit: i stand corrected, you are right.

however, only a very small margin of users running Dynamics RMS is affected by this 'bug'.

Still wouldn't want to slipstream a buggy version.

there will be no new build, 5512 is final.

it just won't be distributed via microsoft download center/windows automatic update until the patch for Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) is ready.

the error in question does not affect RMS if installed on a Windpws XP SP3 system ... it only occurs if you want to upgrade an existing installation running RMS.

so, IF you're running RMS and IF you don't want to reinstall windows but rather upgrade from SP2, THEN you can't install SP3 until RMS is patched.

no need to spread FUD about a 'buggy version' because when SP3 will be released eventually it won't be any less 'buggy' but exactly the same file.

Makes sense I guess. I have downloaded SP3 but will wait before applying. I don't know about FUD though.

All it's going to be is a hotfix just like it will be for vista. RMS only mabye effects 1% of computer users out there. Most people don't know what RMS is let alone use it.

Here' the solution from a Microsoft support chat session. Download SubInACL.exe from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/... and follow the instructions at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377 on how to use SubInACL.exe to reset the registry and file permissions (Method 3). After doing this, installation for SP3 ran without a hitch.
