Hey guys,

Theyve come out with an XP SP3 'Release Candidate' (beta) version that I got installed on my laptop fine but am having problems installing it on my desktop (i've tweaked around with both computers but on the desktop it wont work and i dont know how to pinpoint the registry key, service, or whatever else it is thats stopping it"

Here is the EVENT LOG error and its the same error i get, of course, during installation:

Windows XP Service Pack 3 installation failed.
Access is denied.

and after this shows up the installation restores everything i believe or what didnt work and i get:

Windows XP Service Pack 3 was removed from your computer, and the previous Windows XP configuration was restored.

SP3 RC1 is no different than any other beta...it's not 100% ready & *may* contain bugs. Why not just wait for the real deal? I'm sure it won't be long.

I have to go against the grain on this one jam. Any software publicly or selectively distributed as a "release candidate" is potentially the real deal & arguably very different from other preview releases like those in the Alpha & Beta stages.

However, based on some of M$' antics in the past, I can understand why you may have dubbed their (XP) SP3 RC1 release as no different than any other beta release -- WINME hello! Moreover, even a product that has gone gold is allowed to have an 'X' amount of bugs in it ;-)

My question to the OP here is this: was any of the many *hack* SP3 leaks that had been floating around prior to this official RC1 installed on this machine?

To make the question easier, where did you download the SP from?

I think from the following link...

Why bother install it at all? 1. It's timed to implode. 2. When the official SP3 rolls out in first half 2008 you will have to uninstall the Beta version first - quite a mess and a big NO GO if your PC is used everyday for productivity.

I actually downloaded the SP3 package from:

this is also where I downloaded it and successfully installed it on my laptop, its just not working on my home PC and nothing in the event log is helping.

I hate to say this but I am afraid you're on your own. There is no M$ support for beta programs. Uninstall it.

I was hoping someone might know, I never planned on contacting Microsoft for help with this issue nor could I find it when browsing the web, too many issues apparently have similar keywords =)
