XP SP3 + Automatic Updates

I have a quick question... I installed XP SP2 on a new machine for a friend and ran the SP3 update. Basically it screwed the install and went into a blue screen / boot loop.

Needless to say I ended up re-installing the OS and redoing all the MS updates except SP3.

My question is, is it possible that SP3 can d/l itself under automatic updates? I've left them turned on.

Thankyou for any help.

I hope you didn't get the idea that automatic SP3 update will work whereas manual update didn't. Chances are it will also fail. Can you give us the BSOD error code when you tried to install SP3?

Heya Xp... I just wasn't sure if the SP3 update would download automatically or if you had to tell it to download (like SP1 for Vista).

I done all of the updates manually with the initial install then left the automatic updates feature switched on so it didn't require user intervention. But I'm not willing to risk SP3 being installed by accident.

I'm not sure what the blue screen showed, I just tried to enter safe mode so I could uninstall SP3. When I couldn't get into safe mode I went ahead and reinstalled XP to save myself the pain (It was a brand new OS install so there was no data that needed salvaging).

The Computer has an ASUS m/b and CPU, I read earlier posts in this forum about SP3 compatibility with this hardware.

Cheers Guys
