Has anyone else heard of the xp sp2?? It's suppose to be better then the sp1 with the security issues. But I guess it's not released yet for Windows xp. All I can find is Office XP Sp2. There was one place that I did find the sp2 but it said that it was not supported by Microsoft.

Hi Michelle,
I wouldn't get SP2 just yet, as SP2 is more than the usual roll-up of bug fixes and updates. In fact the bugs are fixed so good this time around, that some programs may stop working altogether. :-D

Some Programs May No Longer Work on Windows XP SP2

Hope That Helps.

I'll live with the bugs and just keep itching. I won't touch SP2 until I have no choice (when it comes slipstreamed with XP on a new computer).

ER4S3R, that is what I was reading about also. Now if Microsoft has finally managed to put Windows together like it should of been, whether through sp's, updates or whatever means that they can and Windows then becomes alot more secure then why wouldn't other people want to have the SP2. I know it may cause some programs to stop working correctly or altogether, but wouldn't that make you wonder if the one's that stop working could also of been some of the security issues and problems that we face today with internet?? If a program would stop working and it was a "free version", then fine, I would just try something else. If it was one that I paid for then I would get in touch with the company and find out if they are going to improve their product.

XP SP2 is currently in the beta testing stages. The current biuld is only 2082, and this is the second biuld that has been released to beta testers such as myself. This is not even at Beta2 stages yet, Biuld 2055 was Beta1, and this is just an interm release. Think of it as Beta1.5. According to MS, SP2 is supposed to go RTM either Q2 2004, or Q3 2004. Since there are so many bugs, (such as the new security center and new firewall are not yet finished, also program incompatibilities), I would expect it Q3 2004, (July-September 2004).
There is only one stupid question, the question that is not asked.

Well I agree with JohnO, I'd rather keep itching with the bugs, until I really have to install this service pack.
I guess it's ok for some to ahead and try to get "all" their bugs fixed, but if you look at it from another perspective, turns out SP2 will be rendering applications inoperable. Therefore until software developers fall in line and accept the new "security improvements, I think I'll take a risk with the bugs and security holes.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for using secure applications with fixed bugs, but when you lose all the good applications, security isn't really an issue.
Quote: If developers do find that SP2 breaks their applications, it most likely means that they were not following best practices in terms of security when writing their applications, according to Goodhew.
We're talking about alot of great open source software, as well as your avearge household names here. It'll be a shame to lose them all, which is why I will be keeping mine :-D
Quote: Thor Larholm, a senior security researcher at PivX Solutions in Newport Beach, California. "By design, many of the new security improvements will break functions for a wide range of applications," he says.
A chilling reminder about the implications of SP2. Despite all this SP2 is still in it's beta stages like K_semler explains, so there might still be hope for many software developers.
