I have installed the new SP2 and have run into a minor problem. After installing and rebooting I can't seem to connect to the internet at all. I tried typing in yahoo and msn and various other sites and all I get is page not found. I have even gone into the windows firewall and tried setting up to allow these sites and still no go. All the settings in internet explorer are correct and I even followed a guideline by microsoft for some problems that might be causing this and still no go. If anyone else out there has had this problem then maybe you can assist me in fixing this. So far i'm not thrilled with this new SP2 at all. Thanks for any help that anyone might offer.

Defrag
Disk Cleanup
Run msconfig

All stuff like that should run things a little faster.

So you're telling me to defrag....disk cleanup and msconfig after i d/l a stupid update and that will fix the problem. No it still will not connect to the internet after i have cleaned up cookies and deleted offline content. So if everytime I d/l an update from microsoft and I have to run defrag and msconfig and all the other garbage then I find that a real pain. Ok so maybe not a real pain all the time I am a firm believer in running defrag at least twice a month due to d/l of programs. But in this instance it has nothing to do with letting me connect to the internet. I don't have any problems with it being sluggish I JUST CANNOT CONNECT TO THE FLIPPING INTERNET AFTER DOWNLOADING THE STUPID SP2 FROM MICROSOFT.

hi
right click the my computer icon go to properties then go to hardware.go to device manager make sure the device you are using to connect to the net <usb..ethernet card> doesnt have a yellow or red mark next to them.if it has a rex mark double click and select enable device if it has a yellow mark most likey means need to reinstall drivers.

No problem. It just has me baffled as to why this is happening and I appreciate any response. I have two computers and I am reluctant to d/l the SP2 for the other one if it's giving me problems with one.

Are you running a third party firewall along with the XP2 firewall? Several other posts warn against this as there may be conflicts (though not always).
Have you tried disabling the firewall completely and then tried to go to the internet? If so at least this would prove it is the SP2 firewall causing the problem if you can access the internet then.
Sorry I have no other suggestions to make.

Yes I did have another firewall turned on and disabled it and still couldn't connect. I even disabled the new windows firewall and still no go. I guess I could d/l the SP2 to the other one but it makes me leary to do so since I am having minor problems with the first computer.

hi,
what 3 rd party firewall are you using??i believe zonealarm has a conflict with sp2 i could be wrong but im sure i saw a previous post on it.and some firewalls when you disable them <like mine sygate> wont let you connect to the net.you can do a search of previous sp2 posts on here just type it in at the top in the search bar.

I don't consider losing my internet conection a minor problem!!! Perhaps though it is still a conflict have you tried going to the website of the other firewall? I no Norton's has a SP2 section in their website now.
You mentioned that you checked that your adaptors are working in Control Panel. Have you looked in Network Connections and the properties of your connecting adaptor under advanced and deselected the firewall there? I realise this may be redundant if you've gone through an MS troubleshoot.
Good Luck

LOL. Well connecting to the internet isn't really a minor problem but then I didn't wanna sound like a NET JUNKIE. My third party firewall is zonealarm. When it comes to fixing any problem on a computer I do not think that anything is redundant at all. I do believe I checked also but I will go back thru my checklist I have created just in case I run into this problem on the other computer. I noticed a section in one of the solutions to fixing problems in the XP SP2 for zone alarm and also for norton. Thanks for the help I will check those sites and let you know what happens. If anyone has any more solutions please feel free to help. Thanks so far for all the suggestions that have been offered.

I did that also it tells me it can't repair and to contact whoever controls the network. I have decided to remove it and to leave it completely off the computer. I can't understand why this is being such a pain and have gone thru every step possible to fix it. I shut off the third party firewall thru msconfig and still cannot access the internet. All connections seem proper yet I still am pulling my hair out over a stupid update that seems to have bugs in it and personally why release an update if you haven't fixed everything yourself. I am smart enough to realize that microsoft will always have problems and that life is just unfair at times. LOL. Thanks to all who have suggested different things. Have a good day to all!!!!!

Just a thought but did you try and remove the adaptor then reinstall it? Also perhaps updated drivers for same? Maybe you'll have to wait for SP2 drivers. :(

You know that is the one thing i didn't do. I should have tried that. Thanks for that suggestion and I will try to see if that fixes the problem if not lord knows what will fix it. You would think they would have thought about all that before releasing an update. But, hey it's microsoft and they have the power!!!!

hi
glad its fixed for now,but im guessing its only a temp fix.eventually sp2 will need to be installed for future updates to be installed.you will still need to find the conflict on the computer.i myself had some issues with sp2.im on my third try with sp2.and so far its working flawlessly,i installed it in safe mode with minimum resources running.i have no clue if it really makes a diffrence installing it that way but its the only way i was able to install it successfully.so maybe try it again in safemode, but what works for one person wont work for everyone.

Yea I hear you on that. I will try the safe mode also but I will read more on the update to see if there is something that is causing this to be such a pain. I am going to install it on the second computer first then if i have no problems with it then maybe it might have to do with the computer itself. Again thanks to all who has assisted me in this problem. I am still interested if anyone else has any solutions.

I had the same problem (connecting to the net) after installing SP2. I found once I turned off the windows firewall and turned on my 3rd party firewall (sygate) the problem was resolved. I also noticed that SP2 wouldn't let me connect to the net without a firewall running.

I am staying connected to the interent, but my IE will not open at all, nor will my Yahoo messanger or AOL. I can check email and use WinMx, but cannot get my explorer to even open since I downloaded SP2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I had the same problem when installing SP2. Internet would just load a couple of slow pages and then stop every time. I tried on both my network cards with the same result so that wasn't the problem. After a really annoying 5 hours without success, I have now uninstalled SP2 and the Internet is working again.

Thanks for nothing Microsoft.
