My Dell was shipped with SP1, but this seems to have been updated to SP2 by automatic update.
I'm trying to install the fax service, but can't as its asking for the SP2 CD, which I don't have.

Could anyone let me know if this is available on the web, or if there's any way to get around this.
When I install my SP1 CD, nothing happens.
CheersT

IF this isn't possible, can anyone recomend a simple, free fax software package that I can download.

This should have a link to order SP2 on CD.
How to Obtain the Latest Windows XP Service Pack
Not sure if having one would help.

When did you buy your Dell? They have been shipping their computers with SP-2 already installed for some time now.....
If you need it on disk, call their tech support and request they send it to you. My new Dell didn't come with a Windows XP reinstall cd, so I called them up and they mailed me three cd's... the Windows Xp reinstallation one; Dell driver's and utilities; and one other one that escapes me right now; can't think of what the heck it was.
They mailed them to me via next day air too.
Hope this helps.... Take care.~Tommyo

The fax service is on the XP cd itself and not on SP2.
If you can borrow an XP cd from someone you can install the service from that. Just adding a service does not require registration, etc.

rhawk7938 is right. I use my XP fax all the time. Also, don't forget, if you are on high speed you will still have to have your 56k modem plugged into a wall outlet phone line in order to send faxes.
Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Thanks for the info.
I called Dell, they said they'd shipped my PC with SP1, and wouldn't send me the SP2 disk.I don't know why XP insists on me using the SP2 disk no.2. I put in the XP disk that came with the dell but XP wasn't happy and rejected it. And why disk no.2.
So I can't install fax from Ad/remove programs.... how can I install it directly from the XP installation CD? Can this be done?
Also, is it safe to uninstall SP2, install the fax, then re-install SP2 again.
Thanks

Uninstalling SP2 may not be safe if you have done any more updates since installing SP2, according
to this article>>Removing Windows software updates in the wrong order may cause the operating system to stop functioning

Backup your files.

Yeah, I didn't think it would be a good idea.
I've downloaded a shareware fax program from Twocows.com which is fine, but I can't understand why Microsoft has made using this simple option so difficult...
