I have two questions:
1. new computers don't include the winxp cd, so if you need to do something that requires the disk what do you do?
2. i have 2 computers in my office. they were networked. one had sp 2 the other didn't (it wouldn't download). finally i got it to download on the 2nd computer. now they are not networked, and running the network wizard again doesn't do anything. also, the one with the new sp2 constantly thinks it is off line (even tho it isn't) and i have to restart it for it to know it is on line. thanks for any help you can give.

1. - some Vendors provide a 'Recovery CD'- some have a Copy of the OS on a Hidden Partition - ask before you buy!

2. - don't know

You asked if you need to do something that requires the disk what do you do?

In addition to what Lesley wrote, recovery or Restore CD (same thing different meaning) is nothing more than a bootable image of the preinstalled factory settings. It will only wipe out the HD and reinstate it back to the factory settings.

Hi ... Your operating system is in a hidden partition , take a look at your manual , It explain everything you need to know , Also I believe that HP still does this if you call them , Ask for them to sent you a product recovery disk , Now I know they were giving this out awhile ago and they still might be , Though there is a charge for it , Something like 20 dollars or so ... I would call them and find out for sure ...

You have two choices.

1. Use this procedure to save bucks

HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - Creating Recovery CDs and DVDs Using Recovery Creator Software

2. Call HP Parts Store at 1-800-227-8164 to order the Recovery CD at cost.

1. What do you want to do?

Personally i would get myself a copy (by copy i mean buy a copy, of course:)

2. How is the pc connected to the net, and what is it thats telling you that your offline?

If you use a router, then make sure the firewall is allowing the pc access! If your connecting through the other pc, make sure that computer is configured to use Internet Connection Sharing properly. Also make sure no software firewall is blocking access - shut them all down and test it! Then obviousley start them all up again and tweak the settings.
