XP slow when connected to network

I recently installed 6 new Dell computers with XP pro on my client's Windows 2000 Server network. Immediately after the install they noticed that it was very slow to save Word and Excel files back to the network drive. Now it is slow to save any files from other software. Also when we go into My Computer it is slow bringing up the folders including the network shares.
They still have their old Win 98 computers. I removed one of the Dell computers and reconnected the old computer and it works fine. Am able to save Word and Excel files without a problem and very quick. I figure this ruled out the network and the network was not changed.
Any suggestions on why the new XP machines would be so slow? They are using Norton Internet Security on the new computers and thought that it might be causing the slowdown but I have disabled it and still very slow. Thanks.
