Hi
Using xppro. since installing updates from windows update (service pack 1 up to the latest security fixes etc) my system is taking a minimum of 5 minutes to get past the black 'windows xp' boot screen. There's no hard drive/any other obvious system activity during this time. After that 5 minutes - fine. No problems in windows whatsoever.
I realise given the amount of updates it's difficult, but is there an obvious answer to my problem? Is there a patch known for causing this? It's not a hardware issue as before i used windows update the boot screen only lasted 3 seconds
I don't have any system restore points.
I've searcged here there and everywhere for an answer so hope someone here can help!

What's your CPU clocked at? It says you have 1GB of RAM?, but how fast is the processor?
Have you checked the Microsoft.com website for any info regarding this issue?

Hit escape - thsn you can see what is posting.
Check the boot/startup menu.
Check the bios to see if the onboard anti virus got turned on and is conflicting with your current AV.
Open up the box and see if your ram has jiggled loose.
Do a performance test - there are plenty of on line ones or you can download one.
Let us know how you make out.
Good luck

Thanks for your responses
Diametric - everything was fine with windows xp until I installed the microsoft updates. I've been using this PC for 2 years now with the same configuration, only under windows 2000.
Greaner - No jiggly ram, no bios AV turned on. I'll try the other suggestions and follow up
Thanks

I really believe it's the updates.
The latest cpu that I built (11-26-03) had the same results and only confirms my theory as I noticed this in the past. Day 1, on boot up, Windows status bar displayed for half a sec (bar didn't get a chance to make even half a cycle). Day 1, after updates, status bar cycles 5 times before displaying logon screen.CPU: P4 2.6C GHz
RAM: 256 Corsair XMS
HDD: WD 7200 rpm 8 mb cache
OS: Win XP Home Edition SP1

I am experiencing the same issue after updating Windows XP and Windows 2000. When I disconnect my USB mouse, the boot process goes back to normal. Could it be a USB issue?

I found this site that describes the problem http://www.usbman.com/winxpusbguide.htm I installed the Microsoft patch KB822603, shutdown the computer plugged the USB mouse back in and booted up. The boot was back to normal speed. The patch seemed to do the trick.

Here's a tip that can change boot-time from 2mins to 30seconds. It applies to both win2k and winxp.
The problem is that by default windows tries to detect the hard drive types on all possible channels at STARTUP and this is a waste of time when all your channels do not contain drives.
->Go to Control panel, device manager, IDE/ATA/ATAPI controllers then the properties of Primary IDE Channel. If the current transfer mode reads Not Applicable for Device1, then set the Device type to NONE for it. Do the same in Secondary Channel.
That's all.
If you add another harddrive later on, simply change this back to auto detection.

I'm having the same problem. I believe it can be tied to a MS update about 1 month ago. It also caused my on screen scrolling to work incorrectly.. (instead of a page at a time it scrolls more than one page. Keyboard scrolling works correctly.
However, back to slow bootup. XPPro.. used to completely boot up rapidly (about 30sec) once I clicked on my computer's icon. Now, when I click on my icon the desktop comes up very rapidly and most of the icons in the lower right taskbar come up rapidly.. But the last three will not come up until activity in Drive A happens.. which is about 45 seconds after the first initial icons pop up.
These last three icons are Zone Alarm, AVG anti-virus and the Intel Active Monitor (Intel's processor temp monitor)
Any further help appreciated.. I'm brand new here so haven't explored a lot.
