I have about three things wrong with my computer and i've been trying to fix them all but I better just concentrate on the most important which is my computer shutting down on its own. Sorry if I write a book. It all began about 2 weeks ago when my sys. shut down on its own. I thought about virus did virus scan found one and got rid of it fixed registry the whole nine yrds. thanx to those of you that helped me here.. Thought problem was fix well no. So I did temp check in bios and its running beyween 75-80 degres F. So i did a defrag and it helped for about 3 days it ran fine than it started up again so i delt with it for 4-6 days till i was ready. 4 days ago it shut down and it wouldn't reboot at all i had to finally put XP disk in and do the repaire, worked good for a few days last night it shut down 5 times while i was on net or not it did it. Than i tried to do a restore from day before and it shut down right when the restore started tried again same thing. Ran cleaner program it found 2 trogan barginbuddy and one other got rid of them and it looked like everything was going well ran for 7 hours on it last night no problem. Come home from work today and computer is off. Try to start and it gets to the xp screen with the green bar and it hangs up there, i turn it off restart same thing 5 times finally 6 try and it goes to scan c and d for errors and it hangs there. try it about 5 times nothing. So i restart and go to safe mode and i see a selection for last known config. Well now it is up and running and hasn't shut off yet been about 1 hour, but it will trust me. So why is my computer doing this and can it be fixed or should i reload windows buy a power supply or just pop a cap in it's back?

sorry for the book but any help at all would be great thank you all for reading.

I had to laugh , !pop a cap!,

sounds like could have a duff power pack there heres some other things to check,i take it the pc is on all day ?
no one using it , other than kazzaring or what ever,
have you got a firewall running?
like zoanalarm , would give you a clue if its a hack attempt.
check your log error reports to see what happened locally, dodgy driver etc

and it doesnt shut down at night when in use? , some one at home trying to tell you somthing lol?
check your power management is set up correctly in the bios and xp.
i say its the power but i dont know what temps during the day do you get vs night time.
we discovered a local guy would spark weld
in his dinner time spiking all the lines!
yeah popped a cap alright!!:o

Thanx for the response. Yeah PC is on most of the time. It stays a constant 79-80 deg. F all the time. It does shut down at night also it's like whenever iot wants to sometimes it will shut down 3-4 times in a row and others it will only do it once or twice a day. In my bios there is one of the voltage readings that is at a -12v but i dont know which one cause im not at home right now i can supply that later. I run on dsl and my router had a firewall but other than that i don't run one. I'm thinking about replacing my power supply and trying that first if it doesn't than should i format my two hard drives and reinstall all or just reinstall windows xp without reformatting.

thanx again
