XP shutting down when on the WEB. I can be on the web for about 4 to 5mins when this happens it comes up with a winnt shuttown counter an dyou have to save any docs before it shutsdown. it did say something in the event veiwer about a file called comres.dll(i think), in the system32 folder but i have replaced this and it does not work. i have also wiped the hard disk and reinstalled XP pro as i thought it might have been a virus but that did not make a difference.

can somebody help???

Sounds like the blaster virus, you can get it as soon as your connection is up and running, I've had it twice immediately after a reinstall.

try a modem driver upgrade. i had a computer with the same problem you are describing. when i ran windows update, it found a driver update for the lucent winmodem that was installed. i updated, and the problem never happened again. give that a shot, if it is indeed blaster, the message y ou will get will say something about RPC, does it? check norton for the blaster removal tool, also. i would check for updates for all my hardware and such at the same time, just to keep things running smoothly. you could also after updating run defrag, as it won't hurt.

This is definetely the Blaster Virus, I have recently installed Windows XP and ran into the same exact problem. I thought i had a corrupted disk or something, however once I went online it gave me the countdown. This is very fixable. There is a patch for Windows that you can get at any Best Buy Store which is what i did, its very cheap and small. Good luck!

why pay for the patch when you can get it online? all you have to do is dl it to a disk, i got it to work just fine and didn't need to BUY it.

i would still try modem drivers. i am not saying that it is NOT the blaster, because it does sound like it, but i can bet that you can get it for FREE instead of paying for it. I did.
