Comment:

Every now and then my computer hangs on “Logging Off” when I shut down. I have to push the power button to shut off my computer. There has not been anything installed or changed on this computer for a very long time and this just started happening about a couple of months ago. I have done some searching but cannot find a fix. The only fix I can find is that SP1 is supposed to fix shutdown problems but I have SP2. Windows update is disabled. Anyone have any ideas?

Please don’t respond by my computer being infected by viruses. I am not a novice on computers but cannot fix this problem.

Restricting the scope of replies is not a reasonable stance, novice-or-not.

You could have told us whether you have already attempted a System Restore.

You could have told us about other 'circumstances' from the time this started happening.

You could have told whether this "...every now and then..." appears totally random (which, likely, it is not).

I agree with justcuz.

Instead of saying ...
Please don’t respond by my computer being infected by viruses. I am not a novice on computers but..

you could have written instead ...
I scanned my PC for virus and none were found but..

You wrote Windows update is disabled

Does this mean that you have not updated your machine with post XP SP2 updates at all?

Who knows that some of the post XP SP2 updates are meant to prevent the problem you are now experiencing.

Windows update being disabled means that I only install what I want installed from it.

I am 100% positive that my computer is not affected with a virus. And yes I just did another full system scan and it found nothing (using kaspersky by the way)

System restore is turned off.

justcuz, "You could have told us about other 'circumstances' from the time this started happening."

Well If I knew what the problem is I wouldn't be posting this on hear.

This hanging thing doesn't happend very often. It just annoying when it does. Like I said I have not installed or changed anything on this computer for a very very long time.

Nothing shows up in event viewer. No devices conflicting in device manager.

I have seen many people from other forums with similar problems and none of them has a fix that helps me. Microsoft's fix is SP1 and I have SP2.

Chuck2, that link doesn't help my problem.

There are about 90 post XP Sp2 updates. Did you read the supporting knowledgebase for each of the updates? I doubt you did because it will take hours and hours to read through them all.

In any event you probably have a bug called Regdefend. See the thread below that closely parallel your problem.

XpUser,

There are currently 40 updates that are available for me to download. Most are security updates and a couple is XP updates. None of them mention anything about shutdown problems. I didn’t read any of the security ones as I really don’t think any of them have anything to do with my problems other than security stuff.

Isn’t Regdefend a part of Ghost Security Suite? If it is then I’m sure that is not my problem. I don’t use it.

So... are you saying you do not have a problem?

You do... and we know it...'cause you already told us, so why this "attitude"?

What can you report about the 'health' of your HDD, other hardware, etc...?

I installed the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service.

I don't have this problem that often so it may take awhile to know if this works.

justcuz, How is a security update going to help?

Check your System Event Log; UPHClean writes to said log whenever it kicks in.

I know not; I haven't used the newer versions. It will, however, be something more substantial than, "Oh, I started," and "Oh, I stopped."

Actually, you'll know it acted, because it'll refer to an .exe file in the log.

After 5 days of no problems my computer hanged again when I went to shut down. In event viewer, UPHClean shows that it's outlook.exe.
