I'm suddenly getting a strange error when I shut down/restart the system. After the windows shutdown screen, I get a bluescreen with information telling me that Windows has been halted and shut down to prevent damage to the system, etc, etc. The important bits of the message are the error message:
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
In file PartMgr.sys
PartMgr.sys is in the C:\windows\system32\drivers\ directory. Is this part of Windows XP, or is it from another program? I only just started getting this error message in the last day, and I figure it must be attributed to a program I installed recently. I did recently re-install 3 programs I had on my Me setup: GetRight 4.5, Adaptec (Roxio) Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum, and Adobe Photoshop 5.5.
Now, since the problem only occurs at shutdown, I have to assume that it's a program that's currently in memory, which would rule out Adaptec (I didn't install DirectCD), and Photoshop (Gamma only loads at startup, and then only to set gamma), which leaves GetRight. However, I tried closing GetRight before shutting down and the same error occurred. And anyway, GetRight doesn't install any drivers. Easy CD might, though -- however I searched through the data CAB file on the install CD and found no reference to this file. Anyone have any idea what might be causing this? It doesn't appear to affect anything else in the system, just at shutdown, so it's not severe, just irritating.

A lot of people have blamed this onthe install of DirectCD & Take Two. I installed Roxio without those 2, and XP works fine. Although it wasn't Roxio that was causing me to get the same error message you have. I'm using a Compaq keyboard with Internet Access Buttons. The software for that was causing shutdown problems for me. The best thing to do is use the system restore in XP and try to go back to just before you installed the programs you said. Then install 1 by 1 and see what does it. GOOD LUCK!

I had the same thing when I installed direct cd 5. When I removed it the error stopped. Also, did you upgrade to the latest version of aspi drivers?
Mike

go to support.microsoft.com
search for article number q165863.
it should show your error about 3/4 of the way down.
It appears to be caused by cd creater 5 platinum-you need to download an update from www.roxio.com to update this software so that it is compatible with xp.
hope this helps

I have been having the same problems too, but it happens when i start up the compter not shutdown. I too installed EZ CD Creater 5, and i too got the same blue screen of death, but when i realized i had a big problem, i tried going in to safe mode, same blue screen of death. so i installed XP on my second Hard Drive, i want in to the new copy (which i am in now) and deleted PartMrg.sys and copyed the one from the new installition to the old one. restarted, and it said to run CHKDSK, for possible errors. i did, found one error. anyway the bottom line is i still can't get back right, i can allways just reformat my HD and start all over again, but takes up too much time.
