My XP Home shuts down very slow. It gets to the "Windows is shutting down" screen and hangs there for up to 5 minutes. It tends to take the longest if the computer has been on for a long time. Suggestions?

Clearing the Pagefile on shutdown is at least one option that will cause the behavior you are experiencing. Do you have it enabled in your Registry? See the tip at the top of URL to determine if you have it enabled.

Try this, in 'control panel' go into 'Administrative tools' and then double click the 'services' shortcut, scroll down until you see 'NVIDIA Driver help' double click it and then next to 'startup type' click the dropdown box and select 'Disabled' from the list, then try shutting down. Of course this will only work if you have an NVIDIA graphics card installed.

And the petrol in the carburetor in my car evapourates in very hot weather causing me to have problems starting it, dosn't mean everybody with tha same car as mine will experience the same problem. Many things can cause a system to hang while shutting down, what holds one system up will not necessarily hold up another.

spoons33,

You are ABSOLUTELY correct! I just mentioned that this particular services does not have any effect on MY computer's ability to shutdown.

Agreed, a number of things can cause this problen personally I would need more info to better help.

Plenty of XP tweak sites out there. In the meantime don't shut down if you don't have too. USE HIBERNATE if your computer has the capability. If your running a standalone computer shut down system restore. Its probably a major cause of your hangtime but it will mean you will have to boot from the CD and run system repair if the stuff hits the fan but you will regain 400MB of space.
