When I try to shut down my pc it automatically restarts. When I try to put it in stand-by mode I get a really weird tripping screen. I know this is a common problem with xp but I just can't find a solution on the web for my problem. Can anybody help me?!!

We'd need more info. What sounds like is happening is that when you are shutting down, Windows XP is encountering an error, and it's set to automatically reboot when it does. So it shuts down, hits an error, and reboots.
Try looking through the Event Viewer logs and see what's been causing some problems. Also look at any programs running in the background when you shut down.
Maybe start a new post with any additional info you can find...
