Hi ,

My computer wont boot to XP and is showing
this message
Checking file system on C:
The type of file system is FAT 32
On of your discs needs to checked for consistency
Windows will now check the disc
Volume serial no is 362E 1B05

It then file checks and shows 100%
the screen then switches to show another message giving me the option to start up Windows using these options..

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with network
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known good configuration
Start Windows normally

I've tried each one of the above options several times and on each occasion after a while the screen simply reverts to the blue screen with the first message
about Checking file system on C:

I have saved some Word files onto the hard disk that I don't want to lose.

Any advise on this would be gratefully rcvd

Thanks

Try changing the bios boot to allow it to boot from the CD 1st or use a boot disk .

Repairing XP .

Start up with your Boot disc or Startup disk in ( without cd rom support )
At the A: prompt , type , sys c: and then press ENTER.

Take out the boot disk and then "Repair" XP by booting from the XP CD and selecting Install >
Repair (NOT recovery console) > Fast Repair.

Another way .

Boot off of a clean windows XP cd, choose install at the first prompt.
It will then search for a previous copy of windows.
When it finds your copy it will stop at the next prompt and ask if you want to do a repair, Hit R at this screen.
If it doesnt mention a repair DO NOT continue.
It will then copy a lot of files and appear to be doing a reinstall (But its not, All your programs and data are safe).
This will allow you to add accounts to the system that will be administrator accounts, it will also fix most problems in XP.
You will have to reactivate after the repair, but dont worry it will reactivate cleanly. This should fix your problems.

You will also have to redo all your updates again....so turn on your firewall in xp if you dont have 3rd party firewall or you will get attacked by blaster and other worms.

ReInstalling WindowsXP
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/windowsxp_tips.htm
If you need to reinstall WindowsXP and want to keep all your current installed applications and settings:
1 . Start WindowsXP
2 . Go to the location of your source files
3 . Run WINNT32 /unattend
I've often need to do this to repair something that had gotten corrupted and didn't want to do a clean install.

Or ,

Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt .
At the command prompt type: winnt32 /unattend
Press Enter .

Or ,

Start > click Run , type cmd and click OK
type: winnt32 /unattend
Press Enter .
