Have never installed XP service packs 1 or 2.
Three years operating without and have not had any problems.
Got all the hot patches, critical updates etc. but never could convince myself to install these on a good running system.
My pc is clean; the only problem I had was installing the patch for the .WMF exploit but got that done eventually.
I'm thinking about updating to service pack 1 but I am having some serious reservations.
Anyone care to explain why I haven't had any issues or suggest why I should update?
(this is not satire)

On my Compaq computer I have only about 4 critical updates. I do not do alot on the Internet. The computer works great.
-------------
Service Pack 2 has SP1 fixes in it.
-------------
Just to say, some Windows Updates can cause other problems to happen in XP. For example:
If I install the IE 6 Security Update Q832894, I then find that all the Help Topics were gone in Windows HELP Index. All came back when I removed
"Internet Explorer Q832894"
from Add/Remove Programs list.SP2 has that update also.
Just to point out that Windows or IE 6 Updates could affect some Windows functions.

Also to say, you should get more RAM.
XP uses all of, at least, 128MB to run properly,
and works better. Then you need more than that
for running other programs. Try 256 or 512 more.

Lucky? sps patch vunerablities. you are vunerable. you just haven't gotten hit yet. same way some people win the lottery and the rest of us don't
Golly gee wilerkers everyone. Learn to Internet Search

Lucky? For 3 years? Hit by what?
Every XP vulnerability has been plugged/contained by using and regularly updating anti virus software and Zone Alarm firewall before Microsoft has even become aware of it.
I'm not convinced.

Just don't use IE and don't open .exe's. Make sure firewall configured right.
I have never had any viruses. And i download tons of stuff.

Gotta get in on this one. I'm anudder Bob D. (#2 for now). I do NOT use IE under any circumstances, do no keep my patches up to date. Use Anti-malware programs daily (update and run). Bought this zt1130 HP laptop in January of 2002. Not a single 'nasty' to date That's 3 years for me too.
If you keep on top of the anti-malware updates, it seems so far, you don't have to worry with MS's patches (which often create their own individual problems).

W32Blaster and the W32Sasser come to mind just for a start.

Yes, we're all 'vulnerable' in many things. No one can foretell the future. Even MS might give up and stop 'supporting' XP.
I was told that innumerable (sp?) times three (3) years ago and still haven't experienced even one attempt at an attack! Think my firewall is the main protection here.
I'm 'staying the course'. Bet we get another year in despite the 'vulnerabilities'. If I do get hit, I'll run my image restore program (CD) and start over again.

Well no sooner said than done. Read this excerpt from another forum, quoting MS plans for XP Home and Pro editions.
"While Microsoft is pushing out mainstream support for Windows XP Home Edition to two years after the shipment of successor Windows Vista, due in the second half of 2006, Windows XP Home Edition will not receive extended support.
That potentially means an end to all support for Window XP Home Edition at the end of 2008, while Windows XP Professional edition should continue until the end of 2013.
It is Microsoft policy not to move consumer products into extended support, although the additional two years have been granted because of the delay to Windows Vista and in recognition of the fact Windows XP Home Edition is "a bit different" to other consumer products from Microsoft, a Microsoft spokesperson said.
It's not like consumers can do without the support. Twenty-four security holes still remain unfixed in Windows XP Home Edition, according to vulnerability monitor Secunia . A total of 109 holes have been found since 5 September, 2005."
