Just recently.. like within the past week or two.. my computer has taken on a mind of its own.. and will just reboot in the middle of whatever i'm doing. at first i thought it was a problem with media player, but it would do it when i wasn't using that as well. I looked a little deeper into the problem in event viewer, and i show an error 4 and 5 for the ACPI..

AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port address (0xcfc), which lies in the 0xcf8 - 0xcff protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.

So with this error information i went to microsofts site for recommendations.. and it states that its a "BIOS" issue.. so i check my bios version with the latest one on microstars site and theres a new one that supposedly fixes a bug with windows XP getting ACPI errors.. but thats all the detail it goes into, so i figure its the fix.. i get the newer version.. upgrade.. and reset my bios to defaults and reboot again.. system comes up fine.. then reboots after awhile.. comes back up.. i check event viewer again.. and its not reporting an error at all now.. so i guess the bug is "FIXED"? perhaps?..

so if anyone has encountered this issue.. i'd love to know how you fixed it.. its really starting to get on my nerves

Thanks

I haven't had the problem, but I picked this up on the web.
----------

This reboot feature in XP/2000 is designed to aid Windows in fixing itself when there's a problem. However, if it can't resolve a conflict the user can find their system trapped in an endless cycle of restarts, known as an "infinite loop".

This can be caused by any number of things, from hardware and software problems to viruses. Antiviruses (Norton, PC-cillin), NVidia cards, ATI Rage and VIA chipset drivers are noted for this behavior.

To stop the loop and see what the error message says, open System Properties by right clicking on My Computer and selecting Properties.

Once you have System Properties open click on the Advanced tab, then click on the Startup and Recovery button at the bottom. When the Startup and Recovery panel opens simply uncheck Automatically Reboot. Then select OK twice. Now the next time your computer encounters the problem you will be presented with a screen that will help you track down the issue you are having.

To help diagnose errors, you can go to technet at Microsoft.

Try this, sometimes it happends when this option is checked:
r-click my computer and go to properties. Then Advenced tab, Click on Setttings in Startup and Recovery, then uncheck Automaticaly restart in System failure. See if that solves your reboot problem.

Just an update.. took me forever to find my own post..

but i didn't list that i did do the advanced properties and turned off the auto restart..

the problem still happens.. i get no blue screen.. it just reboots.. as well.. i saw someone else post that it does this because of HP 9100 cdrw's which i own and use just fine with nero..

and i reiterate this just started happening..
no new software or hardware..

i've got some whacky idea it has to do with a windows update doing something..
so i'm on my way into checking when the last one was installed..

will keep you posted

something else i want to add that i thought was a funny quirk..

just for s&g's i opened my task manager to see if there was anything running in there that would cause an issue..
i left it open.. and the problem was gone for the time being.. and there were no reboots all night.. not even the next morning.. still using the system the same..

i get home from work.. reboot it.. no task manager open.. it reboots.. open task manager when it comes back up.. and its not rebooting..

tell me thats not weird

You want to hear weird? all of a sudden I was unable to installe windows XP on my Dual PIII 700 MHz with 512 MBs. After booting into CD and copying files it'd stop on starting windows setup..... I even tried installing win 98 and win 2k - I would get gibberish words and number during install. boy oh boy! I reset the motherboard in every possible way- including removal of battery. I unpluged everything (cables power inside to hds, cd-roms, even power cable to motherboard etc) and pluged in back together- no work. Then I unpluged everything again and removed the motherboard from the case,-put it back, screw it in and replugged all the cables- now everything works just fine. .... in Windows terms- I had to "restart" the hardware to make it work. Fricken weird!

Great Matt!!

Raexn...you sure your CPU or video card aren't overheating? Also, do you have a RAID controller in your computer?

This was happening to me. Then I discovered that my plastic floor protector would pull on the electric cord when I moved a certain way. Fixed the problem by moving the protector. Pretty low tech, huh?

Hey i'm back!..

well as far as RAID.. yes i do have it.. but its not being used.. and i check the health of the CPU's everytime it reboots and their both doing fabulous.. as for AGP... not using that slot at the moment.. just have a pci vid card..

but i have made some progress.. i'm currently in safemode with networking in xp.. and it seems as though its not rebooting me.. so i'm beginning to think theres some driver conflict going on..
what a piss off eh?.. and i don't even get a blue screen.. fun fun..

i'll keep you guys posted..

well so far.. i've pull most everything out.. took one of the processors out.. and put in a terminator in socket 2..

booted up.. still reboots when it hits anything graphical.. tried reinstalling XP with the single processor in there.. and it reboot again..

swapped out processors.. testing the second now.. when i try to reinstall with this one.. it either freezes on the graphical DOS screen when loading the insatllation screen or it gives me some kind of error related to the page file..

the first was IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
and second was something that stated pagefile.. don't remember exact error..

bleh.. so yeah..
