I formatted my HD and installed XP Home edition. My system also has a HP CD-RW 8100i which my system doesn't recognise but when I do "add new hardware" it pops up saying its found a printer. I cannot find this under my system icon so I think its confusing the CD-RW as a printer. Any ideas on how to sort out this mix-up?

Give you some free advice - leave a Hewlett-Packard machine EXACTLY as you bought it. DO NOT under any circumstances change anything as you'll never get it going again.

I've had MANY HP machines come in with h'ware and s'ware problems that 'CAN'T' be fixed.
I don't even take them in anymore.
Leave it, don't touch it and it'll work fine.
Go back to your old OS and use the 'Recovery CD'

I have an HP machine and changed just about everything on it, anyway's it still works great. Mike i am not to sure what u can do. But i would check hp's site and see if they have any drivers for your cdrw drive. Is your cdrw drive XP compatible? If so are us sure it is finding your cdrw as a printer. Just because u do the add hardware all it is doing is scanning your hardware. It will probably bring up anything that is connected to your pc. Not sure if u just installed this drive or not but if u have nero or whatever burning prog your using make sure u uninstall it and upgrade to the most recent u can find and update it if it needs it. Is your drive showing up in My Computer? If not i would uninstall all cd burning util's. Also make sure u have the ASPI drivers for XP/2000. Also check microsoft for updates on your XP and maybe check the knowledge base to see if there having and particular problems with that type of cdrw drive. Thats all i can tell ya..If u have any other questions reply back or email me. good luck

I've checked for an XP driver but HP charge for it!!! I thought that XP would pick it up as its not that old and its compatible. I use NERO so I'll try an uninstall that software and try again. I'm pretty sure thats the system is confusing the drive for a printer. I cannot find any reference to any printer on my system so I'm confused. The drive doesn't show up on my computer.

Any help or ideas please.

to see if you have a printer on your system, go to start, settings, printers and faxes. if you see a printer next to add a printer than its installed.

as far as it being confused, i HIGHLY DOUBT that it would. your cdrw may be installed already. do you see a cdrom icon in my computer? if so, it should say, "cd-rw drive" or cd rom. you SHOULDNT need a special driver for a cdrw since it uses the same generic driver that all cdrom/dvd/cdrw use.

I just checked Hp's site and your right u do have to pay. But its less then $10 and it will probably solve your problem. U could call HP and ask then what can be done. If u just bought it and it didnt come with XP drivers i would be very mad. But I would try to either call them or just order the cd. good luck

ok... I'm gonna explain this to you in as simple terms as possible.
1. Unless it's a printer, don't buy anything with the HP/Compaq logo on it!!!!!
(i have an HP and its been sent in 2 times only after yelling at several people for an hour at a time.)
2. If the CD-RW came with the computer, reset everything to its original configuration.
3. Pray to god that you didnt change the file structure to NTFS when you installed XP cuz it will void your warrenty. (i had to yell at HP and DELL about this.)
4. If you want XP, buy a new computer!!

My system isn't HP its made by MEDION (German). There isn't any printer attacher or ever has been. The HP CD-RW drive is internal and came with the system and worked prior to formatting and putting on XP. HP helpdesk said that I don't need a driver to get it working as it uses the standard hard disk controller drivers included with the Windows operating system. Help.....
