I've asked this before and Chris made some suggestions, but nothing has worked...so I'm asking again. I can't believe there isn't SOME way to do this!!
---------------
I'm trying to set a custom screensaver using a .jpg I designed for use with the My Pictures Slideshow screensaver available in XP.

I can get it to appear for all users as long as the machine has been logged in to our network (we are an elementary school); however, when the student or teacher logs out, the original (WinXP Prof. logo on a black screen) screensaver comes back, instead of my custom one.

Please, someone, I cannot believe this is an impossible thing to accomplish, and I would surely appreciate your help in making this work!!

Hi hundtm,

Type this into the Run-box:
gpedit.msc
to get the Group Policy Editor

Select this one (in the left pane):

Local Computer Policy
> User Configuration
>> Administrative Templates
>>> Control Panel
>>>> Display

Now, in the right pane, there should be some screensaver-related entries. The one called
Screen Saver executable name
is probably configured to show the default one. Change it to your MyPictures SlideShow screensaver which is [most likely]:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssmypics.scr

That should do the trick.

A small note:
- Don't mess around with the policies too much.
- And certainly stay away from the Security Policies unless you are 100% sure of what you're doing, or unless it's okay to reformat/reinstall XP on that computer in case the changes you make, lock you out of XP.
Been there - done that :)

Thanks so much...I'm looking at the registry and have found the scrnsave.exe key and Data column next to that key says logon.scr. But how would I edit that and to what?

The way I described, will change that RegKey for you.

If you want to change it directly, then replace the logon.scr with ssmypics.scr

Just doubleclick on the RegKey to change it.

Thanks, svg...My reply to V@no "crossed in the mail" with your initial comments about the Group Policy Editor...;-)

Anyway, I did as you suggested and changed the Screen Saver executable name to C:\windows\system32\ssmypics.scr.....alas, when I logged out of the network, the same old WinXPPro screensaver came back :-(

As long as anyone is logged in, my screensaver appears just fine. It's just when we log out that the other one comes back. <sigh> Anything else I might try?

BTW, we are running Novell Netware 5, if that makes any difference...

wierd, I did try it myself, then I logged out and sit at logon screen for 15 min, then my new screensaver started...
perhaps u should try use just the executable name without the path to it?

An easy solution for now, may be to just rename both screensavers to the other's name.

I still think it's probably a Group Policy.
Maybe a startup-script is configured in there?

I'll let you know if I find a 'real' solution for it.

if u rename login.scr file to something else, XP will automaticaly restore it from the backup...u also can delete it, and rename needed screensaver file to login.scr, but u must be very fast, u have about 5-10 seconds before XP restores it...
this is working solution as well, tryed it myself.
