Comment:

Under Disk Properties/Error Checking, I usually set "automatically fix file system errors" which usually causes scandisk(?) to run on reboot.

All of a sudden,instead, I get:

"checking file system on c:
The type of the file system is NTFS
Cannot open volume for direct access
Windows has finished checking this disk ..."

What does this mean? Why doesn't scandisk work anymore?

Thanks.

Try running it from a command prompt:-

chkdsk /F

(scandisk is a win9x/ME tool, NT based systems use chkdsk).

What does this mean?

When you run Check Disk (CHKDSK) or AutoChk on a partition on which NT is installed you may receive one of the following messages

Cannot lock volume for direct access

Cannot open volume for direct access

This can be caused by a 3rd party application locking the partition such as a virus checker or disk monitor tool.

Click Me for info how to disable any 3rd party services or devices that may be locking the partition.

A possible cause is Norton AntiVirus. See Document ID:2004060108192148 at Symantec Knowledge Base.
