Do your specs meet minimum requirements for xp.
Is your anti virus & anti spyware up to date, have you run scans.
Have you run a registry or disk cleanup, does the disk need defragging.
Do you have a lot of programs run at startup.
Run msconfig, startup tab, de-select some things.
UK MP's are thieving scumbags.
EU members are worse.

Memory might be an issue, but also look at what programs you have installed, free space on HD, and processor speed. Xp does take up more resources then 2000.
Also, do you regularly run spyware removers, registry cleaners, etc?

Have you tested the hard drive. This is the one piece of hardware that causes system slowdowns. I have 3 in the shop right now with failed hard drives (bad sectors) that are causing heavy slowdowns (bad sectors frequently).
