Is there anything out there that will boot a non-booting XP computer and provide access to restore points?
The machine in question is a Sony RS610, did not come with original XP CD, I did create the set of recovery CD's unfortunately all they do is restore (ie. format the drive) the computer to factory specs.
What is the best procedure or software for creating recovery disks for Windows XP?

Boot to Safe mode & select LKGC (Last known good configuration).

Right now there are 5 recovery applications that will do it for you. Read the review HERE and decide for yourself which to buy (I prefer Acronis & Norton Ghost (did you know Symantec is now calling Ghost Norton Save & Restore (a.k.a. Ghost 11?).

More importantly pay close attention to the Full Backup Gotchas found at the bottom of the same article.

But the machine will not boot and if the install is FUBAR then it is probably not worth imaging.

You may need to go shopping for a real Windows CD, or at the least contacting Sony, assuming you are the original owner, registered it, etc.
