XP restart problem--hangs on reboot

OS: xp pro
CPU/Ram: 1.71ghz amd 256ddr 2100

when i restart windows, it always hangs and will not start. its a blue screen. its the light blue screen that you see before the welcome and desktop loads, except xp hangs and will not load the desktop. it will just stay like that and ill have to manualay restart. i dont know how this problem started, but it did over the last week. i dont know what i installed or what happened, but xp shouldnt behave this way.

has anyone had any problems like this and know how to help me?

Try to boot to safe mode. When the computer starts up, press the F8 key until you get the menu. Select just the one that says safe mode.

Once in safe mode, you can try to use the system restore to go back to when it was working. Start -> Programs -> Accesories -> System Tools -> System Restore.

Choose restore to earlier date or time. Select date available prior to the problem starting.
