trvman, you started the wrong repair. You want to go past that one, and do the next one. Microsoft made it a bit tricky. Follow the instructions at the site Syslock provided.

This does not work, when I did this it goes to showing me that the C drive already has XP on it and about installing this again. I hit R when I get to this and nothing happens. If I do this, reinstall on will it save the current "stuff" on the hard drive, or will it wipe out everything? It tells you it is not recomended and it is going to install multiple operating systems on same drive.

Yes, it goes right from pressing F8 to showing that there is a C drive and a recovery drive and ask you which drive you want to put the XP on. If you highlight the C drive and press R, nothing happens. If you then go forward it gives you the warning about installing 2 windows on the same drive. This won't even boot up in safe mode. Some files have been corrupted. I am trying to fix this for a friend so they won't loose anything.

You don't press F8. F8 brings up your Safe Mode Menu. You need to boot to the CD.

You didn't read what you are suppose to do. You have to press F* to accept the license agreement after you put in the disk. I would not have been able to get to install XP if I was in the safe mode. I also stated that it would not boot up in the safe mode.

You don't want to reinstall Xp, you want to repair the current installation. Sounds like you missed a step in the process. Why do you suspect files are corrupted?

Are you reading the screens carefully? If the Windows install is detected, you will be able to run a Repair.

Are you using the XP CD that accompanied the computer?

Ok, once again. This was an upgrade CD for XP which I have. If you read the instructions and it appears that people aren't reading them before posting. You have to press F8 to accept the license agreement.

Once you do this it then prompts you to which operating system you want to install XP on. It doesn't ask if you want to make a repair at this point., I am following the instructions. If you highlight C; it tells you that there is already an operating system on this drive and that it doesn't recommend having 2 XP's on same drive. I don't go any further then that. I am trying to save this persons stuff. I know that if put another operating system on this, it will boot to that new partition and the old partition still won't boot.

So once again, it goes from accepting license agreement to installing system. Nothing about a repair.

No idea what files have become corrupted or lost. It won't boot in safe mode even.

Scroll down to the third screenshot in this link. Are you seeing the option to do a repair and did you say you highlight the c: drive installation and press r for the repair and nothing happens?

When you boot the pc what are you seeing or what isn't it getting past? Error messages, screens, etc.

"Ok, once again. This was an upgrade CD for XP " You NEVER mentioned that in any of your previous comments. Not sure if one can do a Repair from an Upgrade CD. If you're not seeing the option as shown on the screenshots Syslock posted, then you'll just have to get a real XP CD to run the Repair.

You can do a repair install from an upgrade CD providing it was the upgrade CD that installed Winows XP in the first place.

You should get the option to repair before you get to select which installation to repair.
