This is just a little thing. I'm about to perform a repair installation of XP Pro on a computer with XP Pro SP2, but my disc is SP1. Should the service pack different mess the OS up at all? If this were a test computer, then I would just see for myself, but it for a man whose computer I am repairing. Thanks!

Pretty sure you will loose the sp2. Guess you could slipstream the sp1.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

everything will be lost except what is on the installation disc. Just reinstall the updates from windows updates and you should be fine!

Be sure to see how-to's on the repair. You kind of have to go past where you think you should in the process.

i'm not certain what jefro is referring to, but a repair/install is essentially a great big COPY operation. It simply replaced the files with the originals on the CD.

You lose ALL PATCHES from the patch level of the CD. So if it's just SP1, then you need SP1a, SP2, and SP3 (when available or RC)

You can SKIP 'service packs' so if you want to go to SP3 for instance, just get SP3.

Good luck,

J.

If you do go to SP3, be aware it's still BETA (RC2 now I believe), and it stops working at a certain point. So you will have to reinstall.

I recommend just downloading, saving to CD, and installing SP2; (266MB)
