Hi. I'm a Newbie. Had error 39 keyboard not working, driver corrupt/ not installed. Foolishly tried XP Setup Repair. Got to product code screen. k/b not working, so couldn't enter code, and so repair not completed. I now know how to use onscreen keyboard to solve original problem, but cannot stop XP entering Setup when I boot. Can anyone tell me (I am fairly capable) which files to change/delete to boot back into my original XP? I have tried deleting boot.ini (using attrib) and running BOOTCFG/rebuild and FIXBOOT from the recovery console, to no avail.

I'm not sure exactly where you stand. What happens when you boot without the CD in the drive? Have you tried F8 and last known good config?

What type of keyboard is it? PS/2 or USB?

Thanks for swift responses. Keyboard problem is with both PS2 and USB. Booting without CD in drive leads to "Setup is continuing" or similar, which just takes me to keycode screen again. Using repair console (with CD in, of course) gives me functional k/b in the CMD environment, so I can explore and modify from the prompt. The machine is at my friend's house - I think I tried Last Known Good and was told I couldn't use it as setup was running (same with all Safe Mode options). What do you think of making sure boot.ini points to C:\Windows and then deleting SETUP directory?
Thanks. Keith.

Hi there.
I think your problem can be solved by running reimage from their boot CD.

Thanks everyone. I got her data off onto a USB stick by using a Xubuntu CD (YAY Go Linux!)and since the machine was in a bit of a mess anyway we've decided to go for FDISK and a full reinstall. Thanks again guys. Keith.
