I have a computer that was shutting off periodically, without any error messages. I have monitored the system temp at is usually at about 110 d/f, so I do not feel this is a heat induced problem.
The problem got progessively worst, as now the system will not boot up. In the middle of the XP splash, the monitor will shut off. I have tried using Safe Mode, and that worked. I was able to setup a scandisk and restart, but the scan never finishes, again the monitor shuts off. I can no longer boot into Safe Mode, as it now hangs after loading MUP.sys. I have attempted to start the recovery console, but it always crashes right when it asks which windows installation to log onto.
I have switched out the memory with no luck, and so I assume this me be hard drive failure.
If anyone can suggest anything, I would greatly appreciate it.

gerardkcohen, SWAG, what you describe sounds to me like an electronic component that's fine so long as it's cold and then fails as it warms up? Sadly, that's not uncommon. A tech should be able to isolate the cause and repair it with little difficulty. Wouldn't call it a typical DIY project.

Since it works in safe mode, I would tend to suspect a driver problem. Anyway, try a system Recovery.
Sorry, I do not check for private messages

Actually, it stopped booting into safe mode over the weekend, it only worked once. I ran the Western Digital Hard Drive Diagnostics in the morning before I left for work this morning, and when I got back the computer was still on with no errors found on the drive. As soon as try to boot off the xp cd, it shuts off. I cant even get close to the recovery console.
This one is really stumping me.
