Hi folks,

I have an old 333MHz Pentium II machine which normally runs XP Pro quite happily. However, when a CR-RW is mounted (it has an Iomega ZipCD650 ATAPI drive) the system unexpectedly reboots, without warning. It only happens when there's a CD-RW in the drive; read-only CDs and CD-Rs are fine, and the system is stable otherwise. I can't update the ZipCD650 driver, as it's a native WinXP item. Anyone seen this before? Thanks in advance.

Hi

The slightly(?) higher power required for the cdrw, might be stressing a failing power supply. If any extra power was required, the power supply unit might not be meetng the required minimum voltage for one or more power feeds.

Suggest you borrow another power supply and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks ananefan, will check this.

May not be a PSU issue though - I can burn CD-RWs and CD-Rs without incident, but just leaving a CD-RW containing data in the drive (so it's accessible from Windows explorer etc.) seems to cause these sporadic reboots. Removing the CD-RW from the drive solves the problem... Also, this never happened when the machine was running Win2k with same hardware.

Hi

Oh thats a strange one. Burning takes a bit of power, so if the PSU was troubled, thats when you'd expect the reboot.

Hopefully someone might know what XP does differently to W2K in regards cdrw.

Some other process must be called whilst a cdrw is in the Iomega drive.

Unexpected reboots are usually faulty PSU or hot cpu or component.

Anyhow, I have to head off for the night. Hmmm, .... its a tough one. Only other solution I can think of, would be Malware/infection type posibility.

I seem to have the same problem with either a floppy and CDR and CDRW, and XP pro SP2. It started when I loaded new ASPI drivers, so I wondered if you might have done something like that. There is an apsi check tool out there to check it out, but for the life of me I cant remember what it is called now.Just check your ASPI drivers.
