Computer boots to the "Windows did not start successfully screen" I have choose safe mode, Last Known Good Config. & Start Normal. It shows the Windows loading screen then reboots again to the first screen using any of the choices. Any help appreciated. I don't want to loose the data I have on the HD.

If Compaq gave you an actual XP CD, you could use Recovery Console to do its limited checks or fixes , maybe fixboot, or chkdsk---
