As I tend to use a lot of softwares at the same time, I noticed this pblm: I have a 700mb swap file on my hard disk, and most of the time its nearly completly used, while I still have 500mb free in my ram. And I'd like to know how can I set up windows so that according to the system needs, he uses all the ram first before the swap file? Do I even have to prevent the use of swap?

Yes this can be a problem with xp. You can force the OS to swap data to disk only when it runs out of volatile memory by adding a line to your System.ini file. Go to the Run dialog box and type msconfig to open the System Configuration Utility dialog box. In the System.ini tab, highlight [386enh] and click New to add a new line beneath this branch. Type: ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 in the empty box that appears then click Apply and restart your computer. This should reduce the amount of file swap that is occuring.

Dear friend, first make your SWAP FILE of fixed SIZE you can do this by first calculating the size of swap file according to the formula 1.5 X physical RAM suppose one has 256mb than he should fix the initial and max size to 384 from system>advanced>performance>advanced>virtualmemory If you have 512mb or more memory you can disable paging all together by selecting No paging file
