XP Pro won't shut down

Go to turn off my desktop. Start->Shutdown->Turnoff. And nothing happens, the window closes and its windows as usual. All the other options in the shutdown window to the same thing: Restart, Hibernate, Standby. So now i have to manually turn off my computer each time.

does the computer get to the point "it is now safe to turn your computer off", like in the good old days of win95 & 98

No the window w/the three options just closes like I had hit cancel. And were back to normal windows

same problem and numeric keypad won't take numbers-it only causes the cursor to move! And the mouse is getting funky--scrolls down only-

put on numlock it's right next to the numpad keys ;-)

We have the same shutdown issue with XP Pro on our new laptop -- my wife figured out that if you hold down the 'CTRL' key while shutting down, it will work.
The other thing you can do is, instead of shutting down from the start menu, first log off to go back to the login page, and then from there shut down. That's a pain though.
