hi.
I am having a real nightmare with XP Professional (Service Pack 2) on my Fujitsu Siemens laptop.
I bought the laptop in August 2004 with XP Home Edition installed on it. The laptop is a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo D Pentium 4, 3.0GHz, 60GB HD, 128Mb Radeon Graphics Card, 1GB Ram.
In August 2005 I had to get Visual Studio.NET and so needed XP Professional installed. The computer worked fine for a couple of months but then I noticed the laptop started to freeze more and more frequently. I did a clean reinstall and the laptop worked for a few weeks but then the freezing problem started again. I tried this reinstall on a number of occasions. It worked ok in the beginning but then the freezing started again.
I also developed a second problem where by the laptop wouldnt boot up. I would turn on the power, the led would flash for the hard disk, the fans would turn but the screen would notlight up and nothing else would happen. I think I have figured out that I didnt allow sufficent time for the motherboard to cool down. This morning, I have since removed the battery and Im going to see if it will boot up in 24 hours time. Its not the main problem Im having (yet).
My problem is the laptop freezing. I sent the laptop away to the manufactor a few months back (after I installed XP Pro) and they did extensive tests on all my hardware components, cleaned the fans and reinstalled home edition. They said everything was working fine and booted my computer up 40 times without issue. The computer didnt freeze in the beginning so I installed XP Professional and my problems started again.
Fujitsu say that since the laptop worked fine with home edition so my freezing problem is not their problem. They can have a look at why the computer wont start but they wont deal with anything to do with XP Professional since I bought it off the shelf. They did say that Service Pack two seems to cause lots of problems with their laptops.
Does anyone know what the problem is ? It affects me when im online and offline doing all kinds of tasks. Its quite random. I need XP Professional for programming and I did spend a lot of cash on Visual Studio.NET. Is it a service pack 2 problem ? I did have all the latest drivers installed.
Any help would be great.

oh i forgot to say. I phoned microsoft and they went through some tests with me. One thing was booting up and then disabling my graphics card and USB's. The laptop seemed to work ok for as long as i tried it.
However once i enabled both of them it froze within 5 minutes. Microsoft said it really didnt narrow down what the problem was.
ATI dont seem to make drivers that run on laptops. When i try to install the latest driver from their website it gives me an error message.
I dont know if this is the problem but it was one of the steps i went through with Microsoft.

The last time I had a problem trying to install SP2 on a customers PC was because their RAM was faulty.
If you have not already tested your RAM I would test it now.

I sent my laptop back to the manufactor and they did extensive tests and they said the memory and other hardware components passed

Newspaper--Sept.3,2004(A.P.)
Microsoft issues warning on Spyware:
The basics of the article is to detect and remove Spyware
from your computer before installing SP2.
...Spyware could cause computers
to freeze up upon installation of the update...

Get Your PC Ready for Windows XP SP2

I am running Microsoft AntiSpyware on the computer along with Mac Afee AntiVius. I dont think thats the problem.
I think there is a conflict somewhere.

Your problem is difficult to find the cause.
Go to:
Search the Knowledge BaseUnder "Advanced Search":
Next to the word FOR, type:hangs
Then click the arrow button.
You can now look through some articles for yourself, to see
if there is any help there.
NOTE:
Check the bottom of any article to see if it applies to your edition of XP (Home or Pro).Use the word HANGS instead of freezes.

im checking through those articles and used the word 'hang' instead of 'frozen'. I cant really find much of relevance.
The problem is the fact that I didnt get a whole pile of error messages back when the screen froze.
I did get one error message that i managed to write down, it was
(0X00000003, 08677BCA8, 0X8677BE1C, 0X80604450)There was another error message but I forgot to write it down.
I tried a few modes with Microsoft help. One was diagnositc mode but the problem was that nothing was happening so i couldnt find the error.
There is a firewall on the computer as well. I dont think its a virus or spyware that is doing the harm. I do remember running several checks to see if it was.
Could it be that there is a hardware device that is causing conflicts with XP Pro ? or is it that XP Pro wasnt written that well?

"I sent my laptop back to the manufactor and they did extensive tests and they said the memory and other hardware components passed"
I would test it anyway just to be sure. For some reason, I don't trust the manufacturers.

what can i do to get the darn thing to boot up ? i hit the power key - the fans turn, the led for the hard disk flashes a few times and then nothing. I have tried everything in the last few days to get the computer to boot up.. from letting it go flat, to inserting cd's.
I think this problem is in relation to the problem that causes my computer to freeze.
I spoke to some technicans at Fujitsu and they said no one phoned in having the same problem with XP-Pro.
its very fustrating

Fujitsu Siemens Amilo D 1840 Laptop
Laptop History
Purchased laptop in August 2004 and laptop has been working without fault until July/August 2005. In July 2005 I purchased Windows XP Professional upgrade and also upgraded the RAM to 1GB. RAM was installed by a computer shop.
Fault problems.
There are two faults on the laptop.
Since using the laptop from around July time (approximately) I had have an intermittent problem that causes the laptop to freeze when using Microsoft XP Professional. It affects the computer when I am both online and offline and when I doing a multitude of different tasks. It happens randomly; sometimes I can go without hours or days of it happening, other times it will happen within 5 – 10 minute intervals.
I developed a second problem where by the laptop wouldn’t boot up. I would turn on the power, the LED would flash for the hard disk a few times, the fans would turn but the screen would not light up and nothing else would happen. I tried booting from the CD, the LED would flash for the CD drive and nothing else would happen. The laptop wouldn’t boot to the BIOS.
I have tried a series of steps on my own to remedy the problem and with technical support from Fujitsu Siemens and Microsoft. All of which have been unsuccessful.
Repair HistoryI contacted Fujitsu Siemens and Microsoft about these two problems and both suggested among other things, that I did a clean re-install. I carried out each suggestion that they both made. At the time the computer did boot up so I could do a clean install. The laptop worked without a problem for a few weeks after the clean install. Then the two problems started to reoccur again (in the above order).
I contacted Fujitsu Siemens again and sent the laptop to customer repairs. They did extensive tests on each hardware component and successfully booted up the machine 40 times without issue. They also cleaned out the fans and did a clean install of XP.
Continued ProblemsThey returned the laptop after a month of looking at it. Within an hour of using the laptop back I noticed that the computer froze while using XP. There was no third party software on the computer and I had just been browsing the internet.
I turned the computer off and when I restarted some minutes later it worked fine. I didn’t have another problem that day. However the freezing problem did start to occur again more and more frequently.
Power Investigation and technical support
Having got the laptop back I was almost certain that the problem was not a hardware one since Fujitsu Siemens did run a number of tests. I checked the power cables in the room where the laptop is used in case there was a fault there but everything was ok.
I spent several hours on the phone to Microsoft to try to identify the problem which was causing the laptop to freeze. Eventually after trying numerous steps they said that they have nothing else to try and thought it was a hardware problem because of the lack of any error message.
One step which I carried out was disabling the NVIDIA 128Mb Graphics card and disabling all the USB connectors. The laptop did work without problem and when I re enabled them again it froze almost instantly. Microsoft said that this didn’t narrow down the problem.
As a last resort Microsoft suggested I download the latest BIOS and carry out a repair installation and record future problems. I was 10 minutes through the repair installation when the computer froze and wouldn’t boot up. I couldn’t get the laptop to start since. Fujitsu Siemens suggested I removed the battery for 24 hours and then try to restart. I did this on 3 occasions and couldn’t get the laptop to boot.
I recently left the laptop into a computer repair shop and the technician thought that it was a hardware problem. He removed the hard disk to try to get the laptop to boot but it failed. He was unable to repair the laptop and suggested I return the laptop to the manufacturer for repairs.

I sent my laptop off to the manufactor 4 weeks ago (or there abouts). They examined it and basically said that there was two things wrong with it : -
The first thing is a part that connects the lcd screen to the motherboard. There is a special name for it. They replaced that immediatley but then when it did start only 1/4 of the screen was lit up. So they had to go and order a brand new screen.
That was the best part of 4 weeks ago. I phoned them today and they said that it is installed and they are sending it back to me. I hope it work ! It has been aware for repairs long enough on two occasions.
I can only speculate to say what caused the laptop to freeze like that. The Fujitsu Siemens technicans arent very helpful, they just do tests and if an individual component fails they just replace that part. They dont look at the system as a whole.
I am expecting to get it back in the next few days and will update this thread in case other people are having the same problem

Im just updating about what went wrong.
They replaced the screen and tranducer (the part that connects the screen to the motherboard) just before christmas.
I phoned them and they were carrying out some SOAP test. They found the harddisk was dead and just replaced it yesterday.
They are going to continue to do more tests now and i should get the laptop back in a few days.
Is this a common problem for Fujitsu Siemens ? That was 3 things broke !!
